Newbie question - how to play music via USB port?

Post by korgyfan »

Hello there,

I'm a newbie to M3. Last night I finally connected my M3 to my PC (Windows XP) via USB port and installed the M3 Editor which I got from Korg website.

I have nice Paradigm speakers connected to my computer, so I was wondering if it's possible to play the keyboard and make the sound go through the USB port --> PC --> to speakers.

I would appreciate any help.

P.S. What's the best software for creating music on a PC?

I don't think there is a way to play your music through USB without Bouncing it out first. you can do it through Midi Cables but than you have to have software....etc

PS that is a huge question and has been asked a bunch on the M3 forum so search around and see what you find or post a question there concerning this. I personally luv Cubase 5 and it works great but you gotta find what program suites you best.

cheers mate!

As said Korg M3 does not send any sound over USB, only MIDI. If you have Firewire EXB installed, then you can send sound digitally to your computer over FW.

If you have speakers connected to your PC then you should have kind a sound card there too. So you can hear your M3 through computer like that:

M3 (L/R out or digital out) --> PC soundcard input (analog or digital) --> Sound routed properly in PC --> PC soundcard output to speakers.

:) This question sounds like "what is the best tool to build house" or "what is the best car to ride road" :)

If you assume that "creating music " means "recording (MIDI or audio - something you play/sing on external instruments), editing, mastering etc" then some kind of DAW (they call it "digital audio workstation"). There are some free and many shareware/commercial ones available. Also as said many forums etc.

Hint: see people's signatures and you may get idea what they are using. Then you can ask in forums or PM: why? :)

I like Reason (www.propellerheads.se) because it has an extensive bundled library, as well as a multitude of free and for-sale samples and patches from a great user- and 3rd party- community, is very easy and intuitive to use (for me, anyway) and you also learn about synthesis as you work with it. You can also endlessly create your own instruments and of course, compose entire (multi-track) songs with it.

Cakewalk Sonar Homestudio is a good choice with excellent price-value ratio.
