Creating styles using a DAW for PA500/PA500ORT
Hi,
I am trying to create styles for my PA500ORT and I have some midi files that I can use as a base for rythems and such.
Can any of you please advice how I can achieve this? I see a thread for PA 800.>> http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=54036
that does not really work for 500 as I don't have a way to export import styles from 500.
what would be my best path to create style for PA500, only using the PA500 and a DAW( I don't have access to other keyboards)
thanks in advance for your help.
regards

Hi,
are you sure you can't export & import styles in the 500?
Check your stylemaker functions in your manual.
or in the keyboard itself, choose a style , goto edit mode, one of the functions should be the import/export function ( if your keyboard has it).
I thought PA500's & 800's were fairly similiar as far as styles except that you don't have a sampler???

Hi Charlie,
do you also have the option of saving the complete style as one long midifile by holding down the "SHIFT" button whilst performing
PRESS EXPORT SMF (standard midi file)
On the PA800 this exports the style as one long midifile with Markers, instead of individual variations etc.

IN STYLE PLAY MODE
PRESS RECORD - record / edit current style
PRESS OK
PRESS MENU
PRESS EXPORT SMF (standard midi file)
Go to variation wanted and select it

Variation is saved to memory card.

Hi Rikki, If there is a way to export the entire style in one go, it is not obvious. I don’t know enough about PA500 yet, to answer your question, just bits and pieces I’ve picked up. I’m sure somebody here can answer your question though. It seems to me that the manual is not very good at explaining things clearly. It must be even worse for a person if their first language is not English and they are trying to read the English version. One thing I’ve found about manuals is that; say for instance, a Japanese company makes a keyboard (or anything else) for the English speaking market. When they write the manual they seem to use a Japanese person who understands English. I think they should use an English speaking person who understands Japanese. That way, the various intricacies of the language come across better. The same principle should apply to any other two languages including Italian (if the korg manuals are written by Italians).

Hi Charlie,
on the PA800, all you have to do is hold down the "SHIFT" button, when you press the export to midifile icon.
MAYBE it's the same in the PA500.
Saves an awful lot of work, if you don't have to export & import all the style parts seperately.

Hi Rikki, I tried to do what you said regarding exporting a whole style. It didn’t seem to work. Only one variation was exported to memory card. Also, the printed information on page 137 of the pa800 manual (korgpa website download version), starting-- EXPORTING A STYLE AS AN SMF SEPARATED BY MARKERS-- does not appear in the pa500 manual. It looks as if pa500 does not have this facility. Thanks anyway.
Thanks a TON everybody. I now see that I can export using this method. However, it does not export all of the style details. as we saw already, it only exported one variation.
1)Anyone knows a way to export all variations together?
2)If a SMF was generated/created outside of PA500 with all details and variations together, does the import take them all and work correctly?
I am asking this thinking that if I get a sample generated from another PA(may be 800?) and use that as a base for new styles and edit to make my own, will that work? any thought?

Hi Songbird, if you don’t want to export variations, or can’t export whole styles from pa500, why don’t you consider making the style within the pa500 ORT itself? At least one knowledgeable member recently stated that using a PA keyboard to make a style is no more difficult than using external software. Others will be able to advise you more.
unfortunately export all variation or the whole style as SMF with markers is limited to PA800/ PAX2 only, please refer to the following link which clearly states that this feature is limited to PA800/ PAX2

Thanks Navid.
that clears that up.
This function wasn't initially available in the PA800 either. It was part of the os 2 update.
Just makes it a bit quicker than having to import/export each cv part individually.

Hi Songbird, you can check out my Basic Tutorial here for some help.charlie67 wrote:Hi Songbird, if you don’t want to export variations, or can’t export whole styles from pa500, why don’t you consider making the style within the pa500 ORT itself? Another way as stated by exporting each variation etc singly and adding them to a sequencer program..OR you could download a good midi file and import that to the sequencer and create 'Markers' of parts that you want. Powertracks is good for this I believe. I assume you can then Import each part back into Style creation on pa500. I don't use pc sequencer software however I know several Members do use this as a means of creating styles. I use Styleworks to create my styles and then work on them in the keyboard.
I hope that's of some help as Style Creation is a very big subject and takes a lot of time to get it right.

thanks everyone for all the advice and help.
the biggest reason I want to edit the SMF using a DAW is that my piano skills are not where I would like it to be!(
). So, for the pieces that I cannot really play live, using a staff editor in the DAW, I can fix that.
Does anyone has as tutorial link for how to create a single SMF that has all variations and a list of markers that we need to create etc?
also, do you know if the PA500 allows to import single file for all variations at the same time?
thanks again....
