do I even need midi cables at all?t

Post by spprw »

apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section of the right forum, but whenever I was using my padKONTROL, or the M3, or some kind of midi controller, I would always plug in the USB cable and two midi cables to the world's worst audio interface (fastttrackpro) and go from there. it wasn't until some months ago that I started playing something in ableton with the controller connected to the computer just by USB and I'm starting to wonder what the purpose of midi cables is at all. I bought a vastly superior audio interface, (actually a few of them) and I'm going to sell some off, I guess, but the one I want to keep has no midi plugs at all. I'm not sure I care. would it be foolish to get rid of all the interface devices I have that have midi in/out ? isn't USB a quicker, simpler way to go?

To connect your USB capable midi gear to computer usually USB (actually Midi over USB) is OK and no need for extra midi connection.

To connect one MIDI gear to another (e.g MIDI key/pad kontroller to sound module etc) still MIDI cable is needed.
