Marillion

Post by Mr.Green »

I noticed that at least one of you guys (Mocando) mentioned Marillion in the stuff you played and I was wondering if you could share the sounds you used.

For now, we're playing Pseudo Silk Kimono, Kayleigh, Lavender, Chelsea Monday and Sugar Mice.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out the "string pad" used in Pseudo Silk Kimono. Out of the box, GM052 - Synth Strings 2 is the closest I could find but it's not quite there. Not that anybody would mind that much but I'm sure you guys like to have the right sound as well.

Edit: I've made a combi with Analog Strings B045 & B046 that sounds much better but could use some work.

Well, actually I haven't played a whole Marillion song yet, we are just building a short medley with some parts of old stuff (Fish time), but have not designed any sound for it, just used the presets.
I have many complex combis for several Genesis songs, and some rush as well, but nothing else.
I will soon share my whole combi and program set, but be aware that my combis cannot be used with a single keyboard, since I've designed them for my setup which consists of three keyboards, the M50 as master tone generator and a wavestation and a roland A33 as midi controllers.
I usually play leads on the wavestation (top), organs, pianos and pads on the roland (bottom) and mellotrons choirs and strings on the M50 (left).
You can build your own combis using the programs, though.

As for the string pad, I can hear is not only strings, but a slight brassy sound, maybe a flute or oboe, I'm not sure, and I'm sadly away from my M50 for an undetermined time since I'm moving to another state. I would try layering the strings, which are by the way very synthetic, with an oboe sample, maybe giving the strings a slightly longer attack than the oboe. I think you can make it with just one program, use the first oscillator for the oboe and the second for the synth strings, modifying the envelope to taste. You can also add a tad bit of portamento, but not too much.

Once I get my M50 back I'll try to replicate it.

Good luck

I've made combis for Pseudo Silk Kimono and Keyleigh. PM me with your email and I'll send them to you.

in case it might help: the synth string for pseudo silk kimono is from the Yamaha DX7.

Kayleigh is mostly PPG Wave. I think that Mark Kelly used the wavestation to recreate that sound on the 1995 tour.

The intro sound for Bridge has the wavestation's "Debussy on wheels" performance in it (the actual waveform that makes those S&H sounds is the *unison patch). Set the vector to C for the best result.

RE: "Debussy on wheels"

Yet another triumph of "first out of the gate wins". There are a surprising number of factory patches that have made it onto hits -- particularly from the late 70's / early 80's when presets rather than knob twists defined the synth's sounds -- DX-7, D-50, M-1, OB-Xa, Juno, and, yes, Wavestation presets were all over the radio back in the day.

Not a lot of imagination, but kool clothes and great haircuts...

(sniff, sniff, sob!)

Bald and programming.
