Kaossitar

Post by keeverw »

Has anyone seen this before?

Some may think it's cheezy or whatever, but I think it's awesome!
I am absolutely gonna do this when I get my Kaossilator. I think it would make the Kaossilator much more playable, with the buttons more ergonomic, and also the added sustain button would be cool too.

What do you think?

Sorry if this is old news. I had never seen it before.

Ok.
So either I'm the only one who thinks this is cool, or it's old news, and there's probably a whole thread about it somewhere that I missed. :)

Yep, very old news. Back from when the original Kaossilator first came out. I don't think it was that long after that this surfaced.

Check out Misa guitars too.

From what I saw the flaming lips version was not even functional, but just for looks. The buttons on the neck weren't tied into the Kaossilator.

I guess I didn't realize the Kaossilator was that old. I have seen it before, but really didn't know what it was. Now that I have learned a little more about it, I see that it has a lot of music-making potential, and I ordered one for myself. Should be here next week or so.

Anyway, sorry to dredge up the past. :)

I was interested in putting together my own Kaossitar (catchy name ain't it?) from a broken Guitar Hero controller and an original KO-1, nothing fancy, no button rewiring or nothing; just a more confortable form factor to jam on.

But then I got my hands on that Rock Band 3 keytar controller, plugged it via Midi into my Electribe EMX-1, put a multi-effect guitar pedal on output 3 of the EMX, and well, it's much more fun to play than a dinky little yellow synth inside a big goofy guitar controller :)

Love that little Kaossilator though, it was my gateway into getting an EMX and tons of other gear I probably don't need!

Now I'd like to see a video of that! I wonder how long it'll be before KORG releases a "kaossitar" of their own.

That little yellow box started it all for me, too.

I'd happily oblige but there's still a few nagging issues with my setup.

1)The Rock Band controller only sends data on Midi channel 1 (so Synth1 on the EMX by default). Since I can't change this on the controller itself, I have to dig in the EMX's menus to reassign Synth1 to Channel 2 and Synth2 to Channel 1 in order to record the next instrument. Repeat for parts 3 to 5, and drums. I'm looking into building/buying a midi channel switch pedal or _something_ that would let me get around this tiresome menu browsing every time I want to switch parts. Easiest way to accomplish this would be to have a laptop sit in-between both devices - but that's not as fun, is it?

2)Modulation strip on neck doesn't work. I have to figure out what CC# it sends then change the midi assignements on the EMX. Pitch bend however does work out of the box. (Just checked - it's CC#1). Both work right away on a Mopho.

3)Sustain Pedal (any old Rock Band kick drum pedal) also works when the controller is plugged into a Mopho, but does nothing on the Electribe. I guess it's a limitation on the EMX.

4)I'm not a great live performer :P
