PBS-TRI Issuses

Post by 3 fingers »

I had this PBS-Tri installed in my Trinity Plus and it worked perfectly for years. I love the Plus board so much that I decided to go for a V3 Pro upgrade and transfer the PBS to it which I did. After a full reset the V3 shows the PBS-Tri present on power up and when I go to the Global P6 screen it shows 4 banks of 2 Meg present. After I load files into it it shows the banks as having far less memory but when I switch to COMBI, banks C and D still show "InitialCombi". I'm trying to install the Mega Piano pack and I've tried this several times now with the same result.

DUH Anybody know what I'm screwing up here? :)

Have you moved the two RAM chips (IC101 & IC102) and inserted with the right orientation into the new machine, as well?

Thanks and yes I did. Global screen P6 shows 4 banks of 2 Meg for an additional 8 Meg before loading files an way less after loading files which I believe is as it should be.

Nope. That page shows correct installation of the PBS module (FLASH memory), not the RAM. The presence of the two chips are not shown anywhere, but banks C and D will fail to retain information if missing or improperly installed. Another thing, a factory reset is necessary to complete installation, I believe - have you done that, too?

You have loaded the respective PCG files as well as the KSC? (If I can recall, the Mega Piano programs may be held in bank D after loading the PCG.)

Also note, the separate RAM chips that you have to manually install have nothing to do with the PBS' 8mb flash memory. They are the chips that hold the new extra C & D Program and Combi bank data.

Thanks to all! I think it's time to pop the cover again and check the RAM chips.

Should be installed in the sockets circled in red and the notch/dot indicating pin1 should be on the yellow mark end of the socket. Make sure to carefully inspect each of the pins as they sometimes get bent inwards and looks like a good contact to the socket whereas they do not touch each other.

Thanks again. Like I said, I installed it in my Plus and it worked perfectly. I was carefully when I transferred it to the V3 but maybe not careful enough; time to pop the cover and take a look see.

Yeah, I know you did and sorry if it sounded annoying repeating myself, I'm just trying to be overly helpful here... :) Sure you know how to do it, but a reminder can be a good thing, sometimes. I for one have installed chips the wrong way around and missed installing components more than just a few times in my 20+ years in electronics and bent IC pins with this type of socket are a rather common problem. Hope your problem will be as easy to solve as this.

No no Joe, thank you and Timo too for the help!

I know what you mean about the sockets; augat/tyco machine screw contacts they're not.

I popped the cover and the chips were seated properly with no bent pins but just in case I took them out and put them back in again with no success. I bought the RAM separately from the PBS-TRI and they're faster than the originals (70 nS) which didn't seem to be an issue in the Plus but maybe it is with this MB. I'd really hate yo loose that option. :(

Timo  thank you so much for reminding me; I installed this PBS-TRI in my Trinity Plus 4 years ago and I'm so embarrassed, of course this was the problem.
