nanoKontrol II Questions

Post by playz123 »

Hi,
Thanks to the generic type manual, if you can call it that, I'm a rather confused new nanoKontrol II owner. The device is working, updated, the Editor installed and working and it shows up in Cubase 6. So that's good. Questions arise though when I try to to use the Editor.

a) I don't see any Scene buttons. I know the original nK had four scenes. Is there now only one scene (i.e. no scene can be selected from the device itself)?

b) I'm confused about creating scenes, storing them, recalling them etc. e.g. I open the Editor and change the far right slider to CC 111. What next? Do I have to Save the scene via Communication menu (I'm on a Mac Pro) > Write Scene Data? Do I then just exit the Editor and in my DAW (Cubase 6) the slider will now be CC111?

c) What is the "Receive Scene Data" selection for? It doesn't appear to ask for any file to load or whatever.

d) Do I need to use "Save As" to save the new scene?

e) When I exit the Editor, it always asks if I want to save the changes. If I say no, does the scene revert to the original scene? If I say "yes", what am I saving....the same as if I used "Save As" in the File menu.

f) The instruction sheet says to hold down the Set and the Rewind keys and power on in order to set the device for use in Cubase etc.. Is that just so the Transport Buttons will work and it won't affect the scene I create in the Editor? It appears that I can have either the Transport controls or the CC scene I've created, but NOT both. Is that correct?

I won't comment about what I think about the manual...will just say I think Korg could have done a much better job. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I can't answer all your questions, however regarding point B, C, D...

'Write' or 'Send' generally refers to sending data over to the device itself. So you would change your settings in the software but then if you want them to actually be transferred to the device, you've got to Write it to the device('s internal memory).

Similarly 'receive' will receive the settings from the device.
IF you haven't made any changes to the settings stored on the device, then you may not notice any difference because they are all so far still at 'default'. But once you've written your own settings to it, this will help for example in downloading the settings briefly just to make a small change, for example.

Save and Save As, are for saving the settings currently loaded into the software to a file on your computer, to keep a backup, store, or maybe share with others.

So you could make a backup by 'Receive' followed by 'Save As'. And you could restore that backup with 'Load' followed by 'Write'. The same principles apply to most MIDI device editor softwares.

Cheers! That certainly does clear up b) c) and d) and is a well written explanation. Most grateful. Now if I can just figure out what is going on with the set-up for a DAW, and figure out how to have both Transport Controls AND personal CC data from the sliders and knobs. :)

Hi,

in fact the new NKII dropped the 4 scenes which is really a pity!! SO no scenes available.

However, there are two different modes:
1st) the MODE as you mentioned designed for different DAWs which you activate by a certain combination of keys. In this mode, all elements are automatically assigned to the standard function volume, the buttons, PAN, the transport area etc.
In this mode, moreover, you can by using the BANK selectors switch between Channel 1-8 and 9-16 etc. in order to control all the channels you have.
In some sense this can be understood as a SCENE mode since the elements have different meaning in that they apply to different sets of 8 channels. But those settings are not user adjustable.

2nd) THe standard CC mode. In the standard mode, you can as usual assign different CCs to the different elements. If you assign sliders to colume and the transport buttons to the respective functions in your DAW, you can get a very similar functioning but are free to e.g., set one row of buttons to different CC# messages.
HOWEVER, in this mode there are no 4 scenes as in the NK1, that is, each element is only assignable to one CC message.

This is really a bummer since it limits the flexibility with regard to its predecessor.

Maybe nativekontrol.com will be able to give some more flexibility in the future, but for the moment you only have the possibility of use the Cubase mode (standard assignment, but at least you can control all channels) or the standard CC mode where each element has only one function.

Cheers J

Thanks very much, joemmi. Those explanations were very helpful. I can't understand either why a positive feature like having 4 scenes in nK 1 would be dropped, so would like to know more about what Korg was thinking....or not thinking! :) Cheers!
