Recording

Post by vlcmcd »

I have the KORG TR and if i understand correctly this machine can record? Or am I wrong? Id like to be able to record and save some of the things I am doing onto the workstation with the thoughts of being able to have it record, that be able to have it play while being able to overlap it or play a "melody 2" while the pre recorded "melody 1" is playing... I hope this makes sense.. Is this possible?

This is what the 'Sequencer' is for.

Sequencer mode is in many ways very similar to combi mode. You can have up to 16 programs, two arpeggiators, etc. You have to set up your own arp and FX settings and routings or at least copy them from other programs and combis.

Sequencing isn't really 'recording'. No actual sound is recorded - just the MIDI performance. Because this is all happening on the workstation, it does make it quite convenient, for example you can sequence a lead line, a melody, etc, and then decide to change the instruments or FX around. Nothing is actually recorded so every time you hit 'play' your performance is effectively being re-synthesized in realtime.

When you're done, if you want to share your full composition, sounds and all, with others, you'll have to physically record the outputs of your keyboard into a computer DAW or CD recorder or other recording device. You can't export from the keyboard itself - only the sequencer song setup or as MIDI performance data.

Which brings me on to another point. Much like when working with stuff on your computer, you have to save to 'disk'. In this case that means that you'll need to have a CF or SD card - whatever slot your model has. Sequences are pretty small because there is no multitrack audio recording, just short events like note on, note off, controller change, etc, so you'll only need a few hundred meg at most.
