Korg KRONOS with Sonar X1

Post by NavidSyed »

Hello everyone, I am trying to connect KRONOS to use with Sonar using USB cable however sonar is not showing the KRONOS as MIDI devices, I did install the USB MIDI driver from Korg website, I did use the "Install KORG USB-MIDI Device" from the Korg folder, I am using windows 7 (64), I am able to select the KRONOS as a audio sound driver within Sonar but it is not visible as MIDI device, not only in sonar but I can not find it in Reason or Live either? is there an essential or necessary step I am missing? thanks for help..

Perhaps you have too many midi devices?

Make sure that the kronos midi is given priority in the Sonar midi options.

Sonar is pretty good at detecting midi devices even after you turn them on too late (after starting Sonar).

When you installed the Kronos midi did you get the latest update from Korg's website? Its in the Downloads area.

PC:Driver:KORG_USB_MIDI_Driver_1.13_r6_PC.zip

And do not connect the Kronos during the driver installation process. In case you forgot that.

I guess you did the original driver install under 'Run as adminitrator" ....?

Try uninstalling the Korg USB midi driver.

Then shut down the PC.

Then plug the Kronos into the usb 2 port on your PC (I think using a USB 1 port will cause problems...maybe that happened?

Switch back on and see if Windows picks up a driver for the Kronos. That worked for me on one PC with Windows 7 32 There seems to be a useful Windows 7 driver for the Kronos that works.

My other Windows 7 64 worked fine too using the Korg driver.

I know you are sincerely trying to help, I have followed all the steps including all your recommendations and no luck I have MIDI-OX installed it does not detect KRONOS either? in the program menu there is a Korg Folder inside that folder there is a program "Configure KORG USB-MIDI Driver" when I click on a small windows pop ups in that window I can choose to see Device List and it does shows, KRONOS, but none of my software are showing Korg KRONOS as MIDI option? :(

What about within Cakewalk? Sorry if that is too obvious. I've often overlooked some basic setting or step myself so just trying to suggest something you may have overlooked.

On my system there are three Korg USB MIDI DRIVER TOOLS options (programs)

Have you run:

Configure Korg Driver Setup Utility

Configure Korg USB-MIDI Driver

Install Korg USB-midi Device?

There is also an Uninstall program listed.

You might want to try calling your local Korg support.

I always use Skype to save costs if the call overseas long distance.

Hey NavidSyed

Step 1 - does your operating system confirm that the Kronos is connected on the MIDI port - e.g. do you get a beep when you plug in or pull the USB lead out of the computer?

I'd start here if MIDI Ox can't find the Kronos....

I had a case where my Windows 7 64bit machine failed to recognise some USB devices. I had to re-set the USB hub/port in the System set up somewhere (try searching on "USB device not recognised") on the Windows 7 support web site for advice on this.

yes I do hear the beep, like I stated in my first post 2 driver are visible in "device manager" under the "sound, video and game controllers", KRONOS and Korg KRONOS, I can actually select the Korg KRONOS as a audio sound source in Sonar X1 but not as a MIDI device, I was wondering if there is an option within KRONOS to disable audio and use MIDI via USB cable?? I hope you understand my current scenario, thanks.. Navid

UPDATE: repeated installing and uninstalling, I can now actually select "KRONOS SOUND" as MIDI output in Sonar preferences, but it is still not showing as MIDI input option?? same goes for MIDI-OX "KRONOS SOUND" is shown as MIDI output device but not as MIDI input? really mind boggling, and really I am not new when using MIDI been doing it for past 10 years...

Hey NavidSyed

I have Sonar XI, W7/64 and MIDI Ox so I'll try plugging in the Kronos tonight and see if I have the same issue....

meanwhile - (and I know that you shouldn't have to do this) have you tried a MIDI to USB cable and seeing if that (cable) is a recognised device in MIDI Ox or Sonar and if so can Tx/Rx MIDI data over this connection.

(This might at least give you a route to getting up and running...MIDI over the cable (on one USB Port) and Adio in parallel over another USB to USB cable)

ps can you confirm that you are X1c version of Sonar - there was aat least 1 reported MIDI Port mapping issue that was fixed?

ps2

Have trawled the Kronos OG and PG documents and there does not appear to be any way to "disable" MIDI over USB on the Kronos - so have to assume your device driver is the issue.

Running a MIDI to USB cable will use the USB Cable's driver and confirm that the Kronos end of the interface works (it would at least confirm its sending all the MIDI messages out on the Global Channel). That would point to the PC end as the guilty party; and the fact that neither MIDI Ox nor Sonar can recognise the K as a MIDI output device kind of points to the device driver.

I've seem something similar before (partial functionality from a Device Driver) where the USB Device Driver was installed with the equipment connected (rather than doing the installation before plugging in the device).

As you've tried repeatedly uninstalling and re-installing I'd suggest that you try a restore the PC to a System Restore Point BEFORE you first plugged the Kronos in and then do the install sequence again.

Did you actually enable KORG MIDI device after installing the driver? There is a second step in the process. Just installing the driver doesn't enable the MIDI device. That is how M3 works. I am sure KRONOS is the same way.

I am not in front of my music computer now, but if look under Start>Programs you will see something like KORG MIDI Device.. there you have to enable KRONOS as the MIDI device.
