Using Control Surface with Local Off
I'm using Kronos in COMBI mode with my computer DAW and have MIDI local off. When I do this I lose control of the Control Surface faders and rotary knobs.
Can you tell me how to gain control of the volume faders and pan knobs with local off?

route them through midi *externally* back into the midi in of the Kronos

Re: Using Control Surface with Local Off
Not sure that would be possible but perhaps try filtering out various midi options in Global mode instead?searlstudio wrote:I'm using Kronos in COMBI mode with my computer DAW and have MIDI local off. When I do this I lose control of the Control Surface faders and rotary knobs.

I don't know what daw you are using, but if you select to Enable Sysex in your daw it will work. At least it does in Logic..searlstudio wrote:I'm using Kronos in COMBI mode with my computer DAW and have MIDI local off. When I do this I lose control of the Control Surface faders and rotary knobs.

If you are using Live, it won't work, as Live does not support Sysex.
In Logic, go to Settings/Midi and check "SySex with Midi Thru Function"

Sure I could create a control surface in my DAW and manually assign the MIDI back, but it seems there would be a way to do this within the keyboard. What's off is that the mix select buttons and the solo button works, but not the faders and pan control.RonF wrote:route them through midi *externally* back into the midi in of the Kronos

This part of the manuals may be helpful:
Parameter Guide -> Global Mode -> Global P1: MIDI -> 1–1: MIDI -> 1–1a: MIDI Setup -> Local Control and the Control Surface

I think you misunderstand "midi local off" and how it works. Dan's reference to the Kronos manual will help you most....but briefly, midi Local OFF disconnects the "local control surface" (keyboard and physical controllers) from the internal sound generation system. Rather it sends those controllers "signal" out the Kronos Midi Out port....so that you can then direct that midi stream to your DAW for recording, and re-route (within your DAW) the midi signal right back out to the physical Midi IN port of the Kronos....so that you can monitor your performance in real time. If you turn Local OFF in Kronos....you have disconnected the controllers from the Kronos. The only way to route the controllers back to the Kronos sound engines is: 1. turn Local ON. or 2. Route the Kronos midi Out port back to the midi IN port...typically through a DAW where you can channelize your output from tracks in the DAW to "parts" in the Kronos.searlstudio wrote:Sure I could create a control surface in my DAW and manually assign the MIDI back, but it seems there would be a way to do this within the keyboard. To put it simply:
Kronos - Local Off
DAW - Midi Patch Thru On
You can now use the Control Surface in Program/Combi mode with Local Off
===========================
When working in a DAW, simple rule to remember
concerning Local Control On or Off in Keyboard:
Local On in Keyboard, Midi Patch Thru Off in DAW
or
Local Off in Keyboard, Midi Patch Thru On in DAW
Either will provide you with use of the Control Surface and no Midi Looping (No Doubling)
