Kaoss pad 3 using with fl studio and audio interfaces

Post by workman39 »

Hi i bought a kaoss pad 3 about 2 years ago and have never understood its true potential. i have recently taken time to try and understand the machine and worked at linking it with fl studio as both an effects panel and a midi controller as yet ive had no luck, but alot of people on the internet are talking about buying an audio interface is this necessary and what exactly does an audio interface give me for the money it costs. i know there is alot to go through there but thats for your help. sam :)

The question is: What do you want to do with the KP3?

If you want to control effects or other things in FLStudio you can just hook up the KP3 into your computer's USB and it can send MIDI data to control your effects/synths/whatever in FL.

If you want to record your FL sounds/drums/synths into the KP3 you should just buy a few jack to rca cables (I wouldn't use the mic input for this so that's why I should buy that cables). If you want you can save the samples on the SD card and load them in FL again via the USB connection, but it's limited to about 7 seconds sample time. (less bpm = longer sample times though)

But if you want to play things in FL that go through your KP3 and directly record everything back into FL with effects and all that, then it would be nice to buy an audio interface. (you also have unlimited sample time then, instead of the limited kp3 sample time)

Thankyou very much i have been looking for this kind of advise everywhere:). This has started to clear up what i need to do. The next questions are:

i had a cd with the kp3 and have lost it is this a necessity for use within fl studio or could somebody briefly talk me through how to set it up.

where you mention jack to rca cables i assume thats running through the headphone jack from my comp to the input of my kp3 and the output of the kp3 to the amplifier??

an the third point mentioned on the interface does that enable me to create effects over a prerecorded track and record them instantly??

i think im starting to get the idea that a kp3 is an effects processor only is this the only use it has - to modify effects??
thanks again. sam :D :D

How irreverent of you to blaspheme the mighty KP3 as "only an effects processor"!

Lol, you're thinking of the mini-kp, which is its little brother.

No, the KP3 has lots going for it besides effects:
-Sampler/resampler
-midi controller
-you can slice and chop up samples
-it has a few vocoder, drum, and synth programs
-looper programs
-SD card capability for saving and storing wav files (2gb max)
-automate motion sequences

You should read the manual so you are aware of all the functions on the KP3, so that you'll be able to get the most use out of it.

And download the editor software, which is a better way to see everything that it does.

If you lost the cd that's no problem, the software online is newer and better, just go to http://korg.com/SupportResults.aspx?productid=269 and click downloads. Don't forget to upgrade your kp3 to OS version 2.0. The OS 2.0 isn't supported by the older editor of the cd, but I'm not sure if the new editor supports older KP3 OS. OS 2.0 has some nice new features too so.

You don't need all the software to make it work in FL, only the USB MIDI driver, it's also in downlaods section.

Yes, computer->(stereo)jack2rca->amp will work.

If you have an audio interface you can play something on track 1 in FL, let output 1 of the interface go to kp3 line-in, then from kp3 line-out to input 1 of the interface and you an directly record track 1 with kp3 effects on track 2.

And last but not least, check out the other features besides the effects of the KP3, like roblabs says, once you're playing with the other features you will notice it can do much more then you think, and it's fun and quick and you can get really weird or nice sounds with it! KP3's a beast!
