Midi Help - Only sending program changes and pedal commands

Post by Jazz Jasper »

Hi all

I am using a Korg Kronos and a Yamaha Motif ES on a gig I'm doing next week and I want to use the Kronos as the master keyboard. The Yamaha has a few specific sounds I'd like to use and I was thinking it would be really cool if when I change patch on the Korg, it would change patch on the Yamaha. The same with Sustain and Expression pedals. This is easily done by setting them to the same Midi channel but it also sends any notes I play to the Yamaha, something I don't want!

Is there anyway I can only send the program/patch change and sustain pedal and expression pedal information to the Yamaha and not the notes?!

I am with the Yamaha with it's clunky interface so any help is much appreciated :)

Thanks!

On the Kronos, no. Unless you're talking about recording data to the sequencer and filtering to/from there. Your best bet would be to see if the Yamaha includes any type of active MIDI event filter which would allow you specify that all events except note on/off are allowed via MIDI.
If not, I'd recommend using a computer in the MIDI chain between the two with software such as Logic Express used to filter out the unwanted note data.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

AFAIK you can't stop the Motif ES to receive note events from the Kronos. You can stop the reception of program change and several controllers, but you can't block the note events :(

Maybe you can do the trick with KARMA, which has a feature to modify the MIDI channel of the notes... this feature is used to allow uninterrumpted voice transitioning within a Combi or Song on Korg M3.

Actually..there is a way....
MIDI SOLUTIONS has a box called Event Processor, you can filter just about any MIDI event or CC through it.
Here in Canada we have it at Long and Mcquade:

Can't you setup a combi, then have one channel dedicated to controlling the Yamaha? You can program the Kronos to send program change commands .. And any other midi messages you want, but not send key on data. (at least I think this is possible).

If you use a laptop with your environment along with a multiport MIDI interface, then you might be interested in using an app like MaxMSP to provide you with fine grain control, including your specific need.

I've written a few articles on how I built a library in Max specifically for doing this kind of thing. Take a look at

KronosX, Eigenharp Alpha, Roland AX-1, Roland A800Pro (4), RME UCX (2), MaxMSP, soft synths from Native Instruments, AAS, Arturia, G-Force, RealLabs, Korg Legacy and others

I'll say from the start I don't have a Kronos (yet, but I'm gradually wearing the wife down :D ) but on a G6 going to an XF I program a zone on the G6 that sends a program change, but with a range of one note that's physically off the end of the keyboard so it'll never get played.

I'd have thought the Kronos could do something like that?
