Korg USB-MIDI driver killed my NanoKEY???

Post by jrx »

Hello,

I have some curious and very frustrating problem.

I've just purchased a Korg NanoKey controller (first series).

When I first plugged it, the deviced was immediately recognized correcttly (my OS i Windows Vista with Service Pack 2) - pop-up window informed me that the driver has been installed correctly. It was even recognized as MIDI device by my DAW, as well (Energy XT) so I could play the VSTi's with it.

But when I installed the newest Korg USB-MIDI driver (downloaded from Korg website) everything totally crashed. The device now isn't recognized anymore (though I can see the name "Korg NanoKey" in control panel). Neither in DAW nor even in the Korg KontrolEditor (NanoKey is listed as not connected).

The worst thing is that now, after numerous attempts (plugging/unplugging, restarting Windows, changing USB ports etc.) to fix it and even the total uninstallation of Korg USB-Midi driver, the device seems to be "dead" - totally not recognized by anything except for the "presence" in control panel.

Has the USB-MIDI drived "killed" the device? It such "paranoic" behabiour possible with such renowned company product? Please help if you have any ideas how to solve this problem.

You probably have too many MIDI drivers.
Windows has some bizarre limitation in that it can only have 10 MIDI devices actually working and assigned to ports.

Korg's driver package includes a utility for troubleshooting this.
Current Gear: Kronos 61, RADIAS-R, Volca Bass, ESX-1, microKorg, MS2000B, R3, Kaossilator Pro +, MiniKP, AX3000B, nanoKontrol, nanoPad MK II,
Other Mfgrs: Moog Sub37, Roland Boutique JX03, Novation MiniNova, Akai APC40, MOTU MIDI TimePiece 2, ART Pro VLA, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40.
Past Gear: Korg Karma, TR61, Poly800, EA-1, ER-1, ES-1, Kawai K1, Novation ReMote37SL, Boss GT-6B
Software: NI Komplete 10 Ultimate, Arturia V Collection, Ableton Live 9. Apple OSX El Capitan on 15" MacBook Pro

Thank you for reply.

But.. what you mean? Except for this NanoKey I remember only one MIDI device that had been ever connected to this computer ;)

Please, can you tell me how to proceed this troubleshooting? (if it's in "configure Korg driver setup utility" - I must say that this feature doesn't seem to turn on).

And is it any logical that after deleting all the drivers and coming back to the "zero point" and plugging the NanoKey once again, this time it doesn't show any reaction (I don't even seen any pop-up window)...

Thanks in advance

I have to say that I can't see any way that the driver could actually 'kill' the pad as it doesn't do anything electronically.
Have you tried plugging it into a different computer? It is far more likely to be a software problem.

The problem with the MIDI device limit can be quite weird because sometimes entries stay behind from older devices, and every time you plug into a different USB port it installs a new driver as if it's an entirely new device! So in some situations it can fill up quite quickly.
I can't remember exactly where the utility is - somewhere under Korg in the start menu called Uninstall device?
By the way, you have to run the Install device utility in order to tell windows to use the Korg driver, otherwise it continues to use the Microsoft Windows driver which doesn't really work properly.

I can't tell you exactly what buttons to press as I no longer use Windows for making music.

Thanks!

Deleting unused MIDI ports really helped, so now the NanoKey seems to work all right.
