First: when I have my r3 connected via usb to my laptop, every time I power down my R3 first it shuts down my computer. Is there a way to prevent this. Turning local control on or off doesn't seem to help and I know I can just leave my R3 on until I want to shut of my computer but that can be quite inconvenient at times.
Second: When I use ableton as a midi controller for my R3 through an audio interface, I try to set up an audio track to record the R3 but it doesn't seem to work even though I have the R3's audio also going into the interface which has a an output connected to the mic input on my laptop.

The first thing sounds scary ;_; I have no help there, unfortunately.ltst wrote:First: when I have my r3 connected via usb to my laptop, every time I power down my R3 first it shuts down my computer. As for the second, does this Mic input work with other devices? When you go into the sound control panel of windows (or system preferences - sound on a mac), and play the R3, does it show sound being inputted? If it does, can you record anything else (like a mic) in Ableton Live? Is the input properly set up in Ableton's settings?

USB is not only a serial communications link, but it also is a power transfer link. If you exceed the power drain limitations of the USB port, it appears that your laptop is shutting down rather than detecting the problem and deactivating the USB port. There may be a driver or BIOS update for your laptop that fixes this problem, since it shouldn't powerdown regardless of any USB powerdrain. It may be a hardware defect with the I/O chipset on the laptop that can't be resolved with software. In this case, you can try to isolate the power drain problem by buying a powered/battery operated USB hub to sit in between the synth and the laptop, which should prevent the laptop from experiencing any power drain when the R3 is powered down - assuming the USB hub is working fine.
