microKontrol pitch bend joystick range

Post by johnmc1985 »

Okay so I have a Korg MicroKontrol and the x-axis of the joy stick is set to +/- 24 half steps which equals a pitch bend of +/- 2 octaves.... -2 octaves to the left and +2 octaves to the right. So, for clarification, If i play an E note then move the joystick all the way to the right, it plays an E note bent up 2 octaves higher.

So here is my question: how do I adjust this range? I would like my pitch bend to be a maximum of 1 octave in either direction. I can't figure out in the manual because they use all kinds of methods and menus and pages and such with out really explaining them. It just assumes you know everything about midi and midi implementation as well as midi programming lingo. well i don't. please help! thanks.

change pitch bend on synthesizer

Post by johnmc1985 »

So i think i've got this figured out. Fully engaging the joystick on the x- axis is actually only bending the note 1 octave. The microKontrol breaks it down into steps from 0 at the center to -24 (all the way left) up to 24 (all the way right). I'm not sure if these values can be changed. However, i did find a solution. I was able to change the range of the pitch bend on the actual synthesizer i was using (Roland MC 505 groovebox). If you are having this problem, look into your synthesizer's (or software program's) "control" menu. Pitch bend settings are usually stored with other "controller settings" such as modulation or aftertouch. Hopefully someone will get some use out of this because i was having a hellofa time.

Pitch bend like any other controller will simply transmit it's full range (for pitch bend, that is a 14-bit number).
It is up to the software or hardware synthesizer to interpret that into whatever note range is appropriate.
