Days before show, crackles and pops, distorted, messed up :(

Post by Urk the Horrible »

Just started, turn it on, and there's a terrible (pretty loud) scratchy, popping, distortion like you get when you turn a knob with a bad pot on a guitar. Doing this just while playing (no knob turning). It's a total "singing frog" thing, in that it is intermitant, can't figure out what's causing it. Hope the show goes well in 2 days :(

Any clue anybody? Is it the tube?

Just played our rehearsal and it only bad noise seemed to get better, rather, we didn't notice it or else it got better after warning up... or? A little nervous.

Thanks y'all.

Hello Urk... This sure sounds like a tube going out...but I don't know if anyone else has experienced this yet...The SV-1 is only a few years old and it seems a little quick for a tube to burn out...
Keep us posted and play your set anyway...the audience will think its the newest craze sound!!!

The tube should only apply to the amp sims. If you shut the amp off does the problem go away?
“So, how many sounds does my SV1 make? Both of them.”

I have just started experiencing the same problem, When I play "hard" on the sv-1 it breaks up (not in a good way) and kinda cuts in and out. It plays fine if I don't push it. If it is the tube, does anyone know how I can replace it? do I need a specific one from korg or can I put one in myself?
need to know asap!! Got gigs! ARGHHHHH

cheers

You can put one in yourself if you don't mind voiding your warranty.

It's a standard 12AX7, but you can't replace it by just removing the clear cover (why?!?), you have to disassemble the back. Search these forums for the service manual with instructions if you fancy a go, but you're probably better off taking it in to your local Korg Approved Service Centre.

If you just turn off the Amp Sim functions, then the tube won't be doing anything, and the sounds should be fine, so that should get you through any gigs until you can get the tube replaced.

Just to correct a few misleading responses:
1) No, you can't just pop a tube in without opening the SV-1 and following an "alignment procedure" to match levels.
2) *edit* link posted below for service manual with no "alignment procedure" included.

This is not the Kronos forum, so no-one has asked for a Kronos service manual.
There is a link to the SV-1 service manual in these forums, which contains full instructions to changing the tube.

I have Alesis M1Active 520USB monitors. After about a year of ownership, I started getting snaps & crackles from it. I traced it to its on & off knob. I wonder if that's what happened with the SV-1 in this case.
