Newbie: How do I record from my M50 to my Macbook Pro?

Post by sanity »

Hi, I'm a newbie to music and music equipment, but I treated myself to a Korg M50 several months ago and have been having great fun with it.

Along with the M50 I purchased a V-Drums PM-10 personal monitor which I plugged into the M-50's mono audio output via a male-to-male TRS cable.

I'm now at the stage where I'd like to be able to record my compositions on my laptop, but I'm really not sure what equipment I need for this, and am bewildered by the options.

Can anyone explain what kind of device I need for this? I don't need anything too special, I'm still in the early stages of this hobby, but I'd like to be able to share my compositions with friends by converting them to MP3. I'm hoping I can get something basic but of decent quality for less than $100. It would also be nice if I can purchase it on Amazon as I have Amazon Prime.

I also find the various cables and connector options a little confusing too. I would appreciate any pointers on what additional cables I might need to add recording to my computer into my current setup. As I've said, my current equipment consists only of the M-50, the PM-10 monitor, and a male-to-male TRS cable.

Thanks in advance!

You can change the headphone out (mini-TRS stereo cable) from sound out to mic in - look in system preferences under sounds / input / use jack for... .
Then you can record direct into Garage Band (sound recording - standard MacBook software) using the headphone out (stereo 1/4" TRS) from your M50 into the (now mic IN) "headphone" jack on your powerbook.

You need a stereo adapter cable: 1/4" TRS Phone to 1/8" TRS Mini.

Or a 1/4" to 1/4" with a mini adapter (TRS).

Or a mini to mini (1/8") with a 1/4" adapter -- you probably have an adapter like this already if you use headphones since most recnt headphone models only come in the iPod-friendly small version.

------------

TRS stands for tip-ring-sleeve and is shorthand for a stereo phone/phono style plug.

The stereo cable is not recommended for the rear output jacks which are mono.
