Korg M3M - DAW setup optimizing ?

Post by clipnotic »

Hello,

I know there are many threads about that and I read the great tutorials on karma-lab wikidot, too! Well, but many informations can produce much confusion, so I will ask about that again because I'm thinking about to buy a M3, soon.

I'm still using hardware synths with my DAW and the DAW is my main sequencer. I create sequences and songs there, automations and sidechaining or other fx routings in the DAW mixer. Moreover I create my beats and working with VST there, too. So I only want to integrate some sounds and Karma sequences from the M3 in my DAW setup, too.

With my hardware synths: Korg Radias, Virus B, JD990 I'm working like that:

1. I have a 88 Key midi keyboard which is connected to the MIDI IN of my DAW

2. With that keyboard I play all my melodies and record sequences in my DAW

3. MIDI OUT from the DAW is send to the Korg Radias for example and with other ports to the other hardware synths, too

4. In the Korg Radias I have 4 timbres in one patch

5. If I want to play all 4 timbres together I'll give them all the same MIDI channel in the Korg Radias

6. If I want to play some timbres with different MIDI notes that timbres will get different MIDI Channels

So I can use the Radias multitimbral and I can record its sequencer with notes from my DAW, too. It's a good integration and a good workflow for me. This solution works with all my hardware synths very good.

But with the Korg M3 it seems to be more complicated because of Karma ... and I don't understand why?

What I want to do with the Korg M3

1. Melodies, chords and notes for starting Karma sequences will play and record in my DAW with my MIDI masterkeyboard

2. MIDI Out of that DAW tracks will send to the Korg M3

3. So like on the Korg M3 itself, I want to control a whole combination with that DAW MIDI track with Karma ...

4. I like to use Combinations because I want to change them on the M3 like I can do with the patches on the Korg Radias. And I want organize them, too, to get different styles fast switchable.

5. Automations like cutoff, pan ... will record in my DAW with my midi controller

So finally:

Is it possible to use the M3 combinations with Karma like that with my DAW?

I ask this because in many tutorials is written that the best way is, to use the sequencer mode and not the combi mode if using the Korg M3 as a soundmodule or a "midi notes receiver" ... and I don't understand why??

I don't want to record MIDI notes from the M3 because I can extract MIDI notes from audio with my DAW directly. And I don't need a midi clock signal because I won't use the M3 drum track. I only want to play and control some sounds of the Korg M3 from my DAW with midi notes and CC and the Karma sequences, too. And for recording the M3 output I will use my RME ADAT.

Is this possible and if, how? A good step-by-step explanation would be great!

Thank you for answer!
