noisy keys

Post by schroed3r1 »

I just purchased the korg kronos 73. The thing sounds incredible, but the one thing that annoys me is the very noisy keys. The thump thump when I press the keys. Is this normal with these things, or do i have to do something about it. I'm not getting any kind of other issues with it, just the thump from the keys. Anyone have any ideas?

When between white keys and front plate (long bar) is too narrow, touch is strange.
It could less those sounds if you just pull that plate a little bit to you carefully.

Sorry if this is not you are talking about.

If it is really only "thump thump" - and not some kind of rattling noise, this is quite normal for a hammer action keybed.

I am not sure what you mean by "these things" - is it much louder compared to other synths you played (if so - hammer action or lightweight?)? Or are you talking about workstations ("these things") in general?

Thanks for the responses. The action on it feels normal and there are no rattling sounds or anything else. Maybe i'm not used to playing on a weighted hammer action keyboard as i've had an ES6 for almost 7 years. I just never remember any of my other 88 key synths making this much noise. It's almost audible when I play with headphones. Guess i'll just get used to it.

Well, the ES6 keybed should be pretty similar to the RH3, regarding mechanical noise. On the other hand, there is of course a difference in the audible noise - even for the very same keybed - depending on how the keybed is mounted in the chassis, and how the casing of the synth is build.
Homepianos or (heavier) stage pianos, especially those with a wooden finish, tend to be more silent than rather lightweight workstations. The Kronos is somewhat inbetween - there are definitely keyboards out there making less noise while playing, and I would guess that the ES6 is not the loudest...

Yes that is something that can be annoying if you are playing at a low Volume output level on any hammer action keyboard, More or less. And you wouldn't be aware of it playing in a noisy music store. If you can hear it with your headphones on I suggest getting headphones with Full ear covers and then you won't hear any external sounds at all. That's what I do. The alternative is… Play your music volume louder So the signal-to-noise ratio is better. I do that too. Then just get totally immersed in The great sound of your Awesome instrument. Enjoy.

I think it's the front plate.

I solved this problem with loosen the screws of the bottom plate near the key with the problem.

So the distance between the keys and the front plate is not so small anymore.

I assumed that since you used the word thump and not scratch or some other word that it was just the normal thump sound that you get with any Keybed When the keys hit bottom. but it's sometimes louder with some. My advice is go to a music store and put your ear to the key bed and listen and compare To see if yours is normal or not. We all have different sensitivities to sounds. What sounds loud to One person may not be noticed by someone else.

My wife & Kids tell me that is loud, most of the time I am too busy enjoying the great sounds that I hear through my headphones or studio monitors. Other times I do hear it but get over it quickly.

Thanks again for all the responses. It is the normal "thump" when they key hits bottom. I hear the same sound when I play my mom's Yamaha Clavinova. I guess it just sounds loud because i may not be used to it and i'm a bit paranoid because of all the forum threads out there regarding the RH3 keybed issues. It really is a fantastic machine. Just updated it from 1.05 to 2.06. I'm sure i'll be a regular here will all sorts of questions.

Same here ;) But that does not depend on which keybed I use. The thumping noise can be quite annoying, especially for people who hear only the keybed noises and not the music - and even more when the player gets really immersed and excited... When practising with headphones, you might go easy on your neighbours, but not really on your roommates ;)

Just to clarify things here.. Is the 'thump' sounds when you press the keys, or it sounds after you release the key??
Love my kronos 88 :D
Love my yamaha psr s910 as well

Korg Kronos 88, Yamaha PSR s910, Korg C720, Yamaha DTX 520, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, a pair of Yamaha HS80 in (soon not to be) an unproperly treated room..

Yeah me to. I think the OP means the playing action sound, as it is quite 'thumpy' sounding. I think it's quite normal.

I'd say this is normal. I received my Kronos 73 today (very happy about that by the way) and yeah, they're loud, but so was my Yamaha weighed key stuff when new. I think it will settle in a bit with use and after a bit you won't notice it so much. A big improvement over the ES6 (I have one, too).

Guys, please explain to me, why is the mechanical noise any keyboard makes even an issue?? For me is a Non issue. I meen... crank the volume louder if it bothers you, or put on some headphones.
I personally couldn't care less about key noise. My old M1, and my T3 and 01/W with the FS keybed are Loud, i mean as loud as my wife can hear the keys in the other room if i'm banging on it a bit harder. I don't so, who cares....? But i'm a live stage kind of guy, not a quiet as a mouse studio guy so what do i know... LOL
