can the Kaoss Pro and the KP3 be midi synced?

Post by sleepingangel »

Hi I am just learning how to use these two devices and so far I just have the rca out from the Pro into the KP3. Here's my LATEST issue (I seem to be running into much trouble) The two units can be set to the exact BPM but a few minutes into it and they are out of sync. That's really not good. So I noticed that there are midi ports on both units. Can it be done that way? and is it easy enough to figure out. The manual is very lacking.
Thanks so much

I'll reply quickly before another user flames you.

yes you can. MIDI out from KPRO into MIDI in on KP3. set clock on KP3 to EXT (external) and clock on KPRO to INT (internal)

you'll probably also need to disable Note info in the MIDI filter. (NoTe: DiS)

I'm not sure what you mean by "flames" me cause I thought this was the place to ask questions? I am just learning and appreciate the expertise that others have to share. I did read the manual but it's very vague. I tried to just adjust the tempo to both without the midi and it never plays well together. I will try what you describe and thanks very much

sometimes simple questions get people screaming "RTFM!" haha. I realise you're new to the forum and instruments tho.

I rarely if ever sync my KPRO and KP3. mine seem to chug along for quite a long time before losing sync (if I just set the BPMs the same on them and don't use MIDI sync)

one thing to mention is that a sampled loop will play at a ever so slightly different speed as a drumloop/pattern held on the touchpad of the Kpro/KP3 so don't expect a looping sample and a touchpad drumloop to stay sync'd much longer than 16 steps.

just make sure that the MIDI master is set to clock:internal (with MIDI OUT from this one) and the MIDI slave is set to clock:external (with MIDI cable going into this ones MIDI IN)

you can maybe try switching which of the two is the master/slave to see if that makes any real difference in the strength of the sync.

The KP3 and KoPro will not remain in sync with any external loopers, even when you have them hooked up by midi. They only can sync their own loops to each other internally. They only use midi in to set the BPM, but not to keep the loop in sync...because they can't do it. You can use one KP3 as the master looper, where its 4 loops all stay in sync. The KoPro, other KP3s, or other input devices can be manually synced to the KP3 by ear, and then can be sampled/resampled on the master KP3 to keep the audio result in sync. However, those audio sources will drift with respect to the master KP3, but that's ok because they aren't heard by the audience, since they are like an album or CD that a DJ has to CUE and sync before adding it to the mix.

The only way i found for synching is to add a sequencer that trigger sample bank (A,B,C,D) on the right time.
The loop is set to one shot. and the sequencer is looping and trigger the appropriate bank at each bar (or at your choice)

It cost about nothing!! I use an old EeePC running Ubuntu: Tango Studio with SEQ24 as sequencer

It work nice and open endless possibilities for composition.
I do improvised music and the small sequencer SEQ24 (Linux & window) works just fine.
