What do you use Monotribe for?

Post by Kevin Nolan »

Curious as to:

What do you use Monotribe for (drum, seq, LFO effects, sfx,.synth,..)

How it's integrated into your setup

Do you sync to other devices

Use for recording or for live, on stage performace?

For fun only or for actual projects
...

Currently I use it as an LFO box of tricks, but with the Firmware upgrade I intend playing it from a Moog Little Phatty as a standard monophonic synth. I'll look at sync options too via the Volca range when they come out.

I've also played around a bit with the Monotribe synced to iMS20 via iPhone SyncControl and that was fun - but am currently on a (major) revamp of my project studio so will not get back to using it in that regard till the final configuration for the studio emerges.

Overall, a surprising range of uses and options for such a little box with only CV and sync connectivity; but all based on it having such a strong sound and range of sounds to start of with.

I use my monotribe for improvised acid basslines, and the kick drum. It is synced to LSDJ for 909/808 samples and chip sounds. Both going into a mixer that allows me to play with FX sends. The FX are also a combination of analog and lofi.

I am using in different scenarios, just having fun and trying out ways of incorporating it in a setup with Ableton Live and other hardware stuff. I bought mine already modded with midi in and out. This is the first jam I did with it, actually only using its hihats as an extension to the TR-707 drums.

This one is a jam based on drums and bass from the Monotribe, with the other instruments syncing to the Monotribe through Ableton Live:

Dude I LOVE your video! I try to inject sections of real playing into my sequences, but I've never dared perform a complete song on that little ribbon keyboard! I take my hat off to you! :D

That's an awesome video! Really well done - cool to see someone actually playing it live. Plus that's some great musicians you got backing you up there :)

Just unboxed mine a couple of hours ago and spent the entire evening creating random patterns and tweaking knobs. This thing is awesome for hammering out squelchy acid patterns. I actually like how the inaccuracy of the ribbon controller helps me create unexpected loops.

If I can get a feel for how to best mask the clickety-click-envelope-cutoffs I know I will be sampling the heck out of this thing with my ESX1.

Good times ahead :D

Use FLUX when recording and it'll smooth out.

I use monotribe to create sounds and then sample it into my production. I like using it alone and making boom bap out of it, sounds like vinyl samples when used right.

A sampler and a monotribe is all you need. It generates its own sample paks.

I'm working on using one in a live project I have planned, alongside samples on a minidisc and textural guitar drones through a load of pedals. I really wanted a simple, flexible (tweakable) drum machine and synth that didn't take up too many mixer inputs and was portable. I started with an ER1 and MiniBrute but wasn't too keen on lugging them both about.

I've mainly used it for samples at the moment (in ACE tracker), but I've midified it and plan to use it for basslines, melody with my MicroKorg.

For a DAW I'm using Cubase Audio Falcon.
