Windows XP - USB Device Not Recognized (Kronos)

Post by StephenKay »

For once, I must ask for some help. ;)

My Windows XP SP2 machine no longer recognizes the Kronos (or my M3 for that matter) when I plug in the USB cable. It tells me:

USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned,
and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem,
click this message.

Upon clicking the message, it shows the USB Root Hub diagram with 6 Ports (5 of them unused), and "Unknown Device" in the port in question.

I tried other USB ports; it does the same thing - all ports do the same things.

I uninstalled the Korg MIDI Driver; I then reinstalled the latest version.

I tried powering down the computer, unplugging it and letting it sit for a half hour. Still the same issue.

With the Kronos plugged in via USB, after that message, if I use the Start Menu to select "Install Korg USB MIDI Device" it says "Error: no device is plugged in."

Plugging the Kronos into my other Windows 7 box works properly, of course, or my Macs. It's just the XP machine that has stopped working.

It seems more of a USB problem or something - any ideas?

It seems like the ports have failed for whatever reason.

But to determine that you need to uninstall the USB drivers (not the Korg drivers, but the Microsoft drivers for your USB hub, sometimes Texas Instruments) and see if they will reinstall.

If they do NOT or the USB hub is not recognized then you know the USB hub is bad. If they do, then try the Korg drivers again as the Korg may work after reinstalling the hub.

I have a USB mouse in Xp SP2 that fails to initilize sometimes. Have to re-boot with it plugged in. Also, does a thumb drive work? That will test the core system.

I don't have a solution but you could try to find more information using Device Manager. Right click each item associated with USB and select Properties. You may see a message that has more information about the problem. Another place that sometimes has useful messages is the Event Viewer. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Browse the logs and see what happens after booting.

If you don't see anything there perhaps you could upgrade Windows to SP3. It's possible that an update was applied automatically that broke something. I have seen other strange things happen where a service pack upgrade corrected the problem.

Stephen,

I have used on Win SP3
My procedure (after several tries):
- Install the new drive from Korg (exe file)
- Re-boot with Kronos plugged in
- XP needs to recognize Kronos and re-install the drive (by windows standard process)
- Works fine

Ps.: I've used a virtual machine on Mac OSX 10.8.3.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried a USB stick; had the same issue. Therefore it seems that I need to reinstall the whole USB drivers of Windows XP, somehow they've become corrupted. :(

Usually the easiest way is to go into device manager, remove the usb port from the list, reboot, it will re-detect the port and re-install the drivers.

First time please turn off your computer and unplug it from hte power suply. Keep it without power for a few minutees and after that you can plug it and turn it on. Maybe it's a goot thing to press the power button without energy tu get the capacitors empty.

If you don't need to use exclusively SP2 then update it to SP3. I guess it will replace some drivers too.

Good luck.
