Laser Recommendations ?

Post by Sharp »

Hi all.
I have 2 little Cluster Lasers that get a awful lot of use. Because I run them for very long hours, days on end, I burn them out quick enough.

Anyone know where I can get a more professional version of these, something much bigger with proper cooling?

I have the Galaxian 3D from American DJ that I have been running for three years on weekends on and off now for my DJ services. Has the cooling fan and is full DMX as well as stand alone. The coverage of the Galaxian 3D is HUGE... It really fills up a room and is crazy great looking especially with fog or haze.

How long do you leave them on for? Its not recommended to leave any laser device on for any long period of time. Money will only buy some additional effects and a few more hours before they flame out.

But as csteen said, the Galaxian 3D is pretty good.

Thanks guys.
That Galaxian 3D looks really great, and they do specifically mention that the running time has no Duty Cycle.

I'll go for one of those. Thank you.

One would be running for about 8 hours 7 nights a week, and at that it will burn out in a month. The second one is simply a spare unit I can quickly swap in to replace the one that dies, and then it's order another one.

The Green Diode is always the one to fail, never the red. You get a few days notice before it's about to fail as you see it flickering more and more until it' simply gives up.

To be honest I have not worked the Galaxian 3D as hard as that but it looks great! There are two models by the way , the Regular and the 3D. I am not sure on the difference but I am using the3D.

If there were any possibility I could hide one from my Wife, I'd buy one in a heart beat. I value my life too much though because she would kill me.

Sharp out of curiosity have you ever opened one up to see what burns out? Is it the laser diode the power supply? I wonder if just desoldering a diode and replacing it would work for you or if it is the power supply maybe fab the case to allow more ventilation or mod it so the power sup is external. Just a thought.

Seems like a capacitor in the PSU. Green diodes take/use more power for the same amount of light.
EDIT: NOT a technician by the way, but if it's already broken it may be worth opening up and seeing if anything obviously fried.

Capacitors bulge upwards if they go bad, even if they've not appeared to leak or fry (which they can do too).

Fixed an LCD PSU by replacing bulging caps with new ones. Very cheap to fix.

Unsure about lasers though.
