Pa3x storage upgrade

Post by joezach »

Hi, I bought a new Pa3x 61 recently. Before I go and add/make my own styles and performances into it, I want to upgrade the storage.
1. How can I figure out the HD capacity of my keyboard as of now?
2. Can I install a new SSD instead of the optional HD upgrade? If so, is there some SSD that is compatible and good. How to go about installing a new SSD? Or alternately, as some one suggested, how about merely a new usb drive with 32/64 GB capacity, in place of the factory installed USB drive. Any suggestions for any particular brand of usb flash drive?

Thanks.

I have replaced the internal USB in mine with a larger one (32gb) and it works fine. I think the original drive was around 3gb with about 1.5gb being used by Korg resources. You can check free storage by going to Media, use the drop down menu and choose Device Info. I should warn you that changing the internal memory will void the warranty.
If you decide to do it then here are a few tips.
1. Do a full resource backup and an external backup of anything else you might have on the drive such as midis before removing it.
2. There is some glue holding in the old stick that will need to be either melted with say a heated knife or carefully cut through.
3. You will need the system reset file available from the korgpa.com site and from memory I think you also need to reload the full operating system again.
4. Choose a good quality USB stick, one that actually specifies it is USB2 and is reasonably fast.
I am not recommending you should do this because of warranty concerns but on the other hand I'm glad I have replaced mine and I never have to worry about running out of storage. I can't understand why the storage wasn't a little larger in the first place.
Cheers,
John

Thanks John.

As for the warranty issue, how is it then if you install a SATA HD, using the Kit recommended by KORG themselves? To the best of my knowledge, the HD is installed after removing this very USB Stick. Pl correct me if I'm wrong.
Again, how about a SSD instead of HD? Any suggestions please? Any particular type or brand of SSD?

The procedure for Hard Disk installation is very similar but not the same. It involves removing the old USB complete with its board so only the wires are unplugged. Putting a new USB stick in leaves the small board there but removes the USB stick only.
HD installation to me looks like a retrograde step - going from SSD to a spinning disk. I can't see any advantages whatsoever of the HD installation when you can simply put a much larger USB memory stick in.
Compatible SSD memory instead of a HD will work but again to what advantage over USB apart from massive amounts of memory that the average user will never use.
Best,
John

Having decided to install an SSD for upgrading storage in my new pa3x 61, I am stuck with the question of how to fix it in the HD bay in the keyboard. The HDIK1(2) is for installing a Hard Drive. I do not think the SSD comes with the holes and grooves and screws to screw it on to the metal bracket supplied with the HDIK. Considering that I'll be moving this key board around the country by road and by air, I need to make sure the SSD is fixed fool-proof inside the keyboard.

Wonder if any one has installed and SSD in his pa3x.

I was also thinking of the RAM Expansion. Any comments on the RAM memory expansion? Is it really worth it?

In any case I can't find a vendor in the US for HDIK-2 or EXB-M256 - 256 MB RAM Expansion Board. Can any one please help? Will the HDIK2 do for installing a 2.5" SSD?
