iPad air "1Gig RAM" question.

Post by AnthonyB »

Hello,

I recently ( Tuesday) got myself an iPad air' and am trying it out now. I was wondering though about the 1GIG RAM on the air, and the 64 bit processor. Since "one" of the main reasons I brought the iPad was to run Korg software (Korg don't do android I understand?, latency?

Now everything runs smooth as butter, BUT I'm worried about the 1 gig ram (versus 3-4 on some tablets), and whether it will cut for future use?/portable studio? As I've just read a post from mac forums: quote:
As I have mentioned in other thred, I'm using iPad as portable music studio and therefore running multiple Synth and DSP apps in tandem with Auria or Cubasis.
Sorry to say, but 1GB of ram simply doesn't cut it on my iPad 4 and it will be even worse with 64bit iPad Air. I would gladly sacrifice 1-2 hours of battery life for additional 1GB of ram anytime.
Oh well, maybe upcoming iPad Pro will do the trick...

So, having read that, it worried me a little, in that iOS 8 or equivalent may slow the iPad air with 1GB ram down. Has anyone here experienced problems on their iPads ?( whatever version).

The poster above says it will be worse on the iPad air, but it's faster ram I believe (DDR3)?

On the other side of the coin, android (I also have note 10.1 with 2gig ram) tend to use more ram I hear.

A 64 bit system will use more memory than a 32 bit system. So even though it's faster you will run out of memory quicker. But don't worry, it's not like everything gets doubled. I'm sure iOS 8 will hold up just as well as 7. By then they will probably have a new version of the iPad and you can upgrade to that. It's the apple way.

Ok, thanks bald eagle. I read something about ram comression and 64 bit processors, maybe applle will keep things smooth with the updates.

IOS uses Ram quite effectively and Apple have not seen the need to upgrade it despite the significant advances in processor speed through 5 versions of iPad.
I wouldnt take too much notice of the poster, sounds like he hasnt even got an air.
I have and its very fast and I have all the Korg apps .....except gadgets.

I think I recognise the post from the other forum, and he is always banging on about the 1gb ram thing, it's like an obsession with him LOL.

1GB ram on a heavyweight desktop os is way too low - on an efficient os like iOS it's actually not such an issue. That is not to say that more ram wouldn't be a bonus, but it is not the big issue that some seem to think it is.

like one of the previous posters I have an iPad air and so far none of my apps have even come close to struggling (in fact many of the korg apps even ran great even on my old iPad3)

I am using an iPad 2 and never ran out of RAM. Processing speed on the other hand... yes. But with the iAir being 10 times faster you rather start lacking CPU power than memory.

my 2cents.

Yes hes on these forums here. The main discussion though is reports in diagnostics, and it is 99.9% low memory all the time that shows up, , even if it doesn't crash. Safari crashes quite a lot, so does the 'twitter' page etc. Not sure if its software or ram related, as apps dont crash, its mainly a internet issue. Also reported in ibooks etc.

Running the 32 bit ipad mini with less than half of the am here and no problems even with ios 7, Go to the Audiobus forum if you want to learn more from actual Air users. Not many complaints of crashes ect from them..

Thanks csteen. I guess 10 million people (say) with ipads who have no problems don't say anything. But 0.0001 % of those who have problems s never seem to stop moaning! I guess for some people it seems "fashionable" to have a good rant. I thought ipad mini had 1gig ram..... :?
