Groove type explanations?
So maybe this is another (i suck at music) caused question, but anyone out there have a quick explanation of the different groovetypes.... because of my ignorance of this i tend to never use them.... same with ableton never really understood grooves.
Also what's the difference between swing and grooves? i always thought they were the same and for the e2 one is global and the other is per part but one is a percentage and the other is a whole bunch of different settings (presets?)
Anyways some clarification would be muchly appreciated.

The best way to learn about the groove setting is to put a closed hi-hat sound on all 16 beats of a 1-bar pattern. Set the groove amount to something high (but not maxed out) then scroll through the groove types.
You'll hear that some groove templates add swing or timing variations. It also creates a pattern of accents and diminished hits. The groove template is named for the drumming style that is most associated with the specific accenting and timing pattern.
The result will sound more like a recorded human drummer instead of a flat machine-like pattern. Sometimes that's what you want, sometimes not. And of course, just because a groove template is named "tambourine" does not mean you can't use it on a snare part. Whatever sounds good.
The swing setting is global per pattern and it's pretty straightforward. It groups pairs of notes and moves the offbeat closer or further away, depending on neg/pos value.
So well explained! thanks a lot! perhaps this will help me add some "character" to my drums... my weakest link has always been drums hence why i gravitated towards straight forward 4 on the floor beats always

Here is a video that shows all the grooves in the E2 using a snare sound.
some grooves add extra timing, extra velocity patterns, or chokes.

there is a bit of reflection on the display of E2 but it is still readable

These are all at a level of 127. By applying smaller amounts of these templates to things like hi-hats, shakers, and busy snare lines - you can really liven up your dynamics.
Great vid. They are a very cool trick up the E2's sleeve and can inject some funk into your patterns.bladuck wrote:Here is a video that shows all the grooves in the E2 using a snare sound.

If I'm not listening to music, or if I'm not making music, then I'm probably thinking about music.

Hi, yesterday i watched this explanation/tutorial on youtube. Its easy to understand and the gut gives us some theoretical background behind shuffle/swing and what is happening with e.g. the velocity. Slightly changes in velocity can make a big difference in feel aka groove. So here is the link:

i still can't figure out how to do some patterns with unusual length and time signature, for example, not 4/4, 8 or 16, but 5/7; 3/9 etc, there is only last step change, which is not the same..
