Updated Free Piano Sets (Edit: Old Thread - see new version)

Post by Reuben »

Its been a while since I posted the free Pianos for the Pa3x (also compatible with Pa900/600) so for those interested in pianos that might have missed this here they are again.
I have extended the Steinway Set of 8 pianos to now include 2 Upright Pianos, 2 new Eps. 2 new Acoustic Pianos and revised versions of the factory Grand and Concert Pianos (so 16 in all).
There is approximately 15mb of PCM samples in this set and I give credit to Antony Sharmann for these fine sounding Steinways. (Provided generously by Antony as free samples to Korg forum members). The Steinways also make use of the inbuilt factory RX effects including pedal resonance, key-off and damper effects to give very detailed and pleasing sounds to play.
What you get in this set is the original 8 Steinways I posted some months back (in the same order in case you have linked these to Styles or Songbook) plus two Upright Pianos based on the same samples plus modified versions of the factory pianos and EP's that have been modified to include greater expression and depth. Gone is one of the major shortcomings of the factory Grand and Concert Grands that seemed to lose depth the harder you played. Also corrected is a smoother transition in expression (The Factory Grands uses 4 distinct levels of filtering while these use filtering via velocity (128 steps) plus some EQ correction over 4 levels). Other subtle improvements include slight tonal release noises on rapid key off.
You can download the extended Steinway set of 16 pianos here:

EDIT Nov 22 , 2015 - A more recent and extended set is available here that includes reworked versions of the Korg Grand Touch Pianos that were released for the Pa1xpro.

If on the other hand you don't want to add any new PCM samples to your keyboard you can download a cut-down set that is a reworking of the factory sounds. This set has the improved Grand and Concert Grands , 2 new EP's and 2 Acoustic Pianos that make use of the under-utilised samples of the factory Acoustic Pianos.
You can download the re-worked factory (no PCM) set of 6 pianos here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rmgufyxe9b4f6 ... T.zip?dl=0

Unzip the file (in Windows right-click and choose Open with...Windows Explorer) and copy the .Set folder to a USB stick.
If you load the sets they will put 16 or 6 pianos (depending on which set you load) into the first 16 or 6 User 1 Sounds. Alternatively you can drill down to the individual sounds and load them to a location of your choice (by selecting Open, Open...User 1, Open... and Load when you see the sound name).
These sets contain sound data only so there are no Global or other folders to upset your keyboard. As always you should perform a Save All or Full Backup before loading.
Hope you enjoy.
John

Thank you so much for sharing.
These are definitely better than the factory settings.

Keep up the good work!

I don't think so!
(but can't try, because I don't own PA800 no more).

This is definitely something that Korg could work on...

The ability to QUICKLY inform you if a SET is incompatible with your arranger.

I think we could also do with a better error identification system, so corrupt SETs could be distinguished from valid ones that are incompatible with the model, and other identifiable errors.

Currently, there's little to inform the user why your machine went into a black hole

The Korgpa.com site does have a compatibility list for Styles but it does not specifically mention sound compatibility. In most cases the list is correct and the above sets will certainly work for the Pa900/3xle/600. What it fails to mention is that the Pa300 doesn't have any User PCM memory so while Styles with factory sounds will work - anything that includes User PCM memory will not work. I think set 2 would work fine in the Pa300.
Ther Pa3x/900/600/300 series it seems have extra parameters in sound over the previous generation including Oscillator EQ, key-off velocities and extra trigger functions.
Here is the Korg site list:
