Is it still a good investing in a used Korg Triton Extreme?

Post by coachmike »

I am looking at a used KORG Triton Extreme. Is it still worth the investment into this model? I have a KORG Pa3X and a KORG TR, but am thinking about the Triton Extreme. I have priced the KORG Kronos X but after the expenses I paid for the Pa3X, I only have finances available for Extreme. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've just bought one (76 note) & I think it's well worth what I paid for it. Previously used Trinity/Triton & the M50 (Beautiful sounding toy) & fitted with the MOSS board & all of the expansion boards built in, The Extreme is the very best of the Triton Range if that's what you wish to add to your arsenal.

I'd love an M3 or a Kronos myself just for a better piano if nothing else but I'm no pianist or Sound perfectionist...I'm just aware as a current (small fry) recording artist that the best sounds are often a necessity.

The Extreme sounds wonderful to these ears...opinions may differ however. They are also holding their prices quite well (typical Triton classic stock are falling rapidly)

It wouldn't sound in any drastic way different to your TR however but would be a welcome trade up in both build & quality.

I own the Extreme and it was by far my favorite until I very recently got a Kronos. I have to say that in some respects it still stacks up very favorably to the Kronos.

Consider, once you know the Triton series architecture the Extreme is the last of that line that has a simple, visible architecture. What I mean by that is that there are only 9 basic edit pages, each with just a few sub pages for more detailed editiing; once you know the content of those pages you can actually find everything you need with only a couple of button pushes.

That has been overtaken by a tidal wave of options and pages in Kronos. Yes, Kronos is WAY more capable, but for more straightforward sound design, especially putting together combinations, I like the Extreme's workflow.

What you're missing, with the Extreme, is an alternative to the Korg-ish ROMpler sounds that the Pa3X is also putting out. If you are happy with those sounds then Extreme is the best thing to get short of a Kronos -- best being loosely defined as something that is not radically different from your TR experience and thus has the shortest learning curve which gets you on stage at comfort level sooner.

Kronos sounds exactly like a Triton and nothing like a Triton. But that will be out of your price point by $1000 or more.

... Leaving either a Motif/MO series (Yamaha) or one of Roland's past flagships.

Between Yamaha and Roland, I think I like Yamaha better.

The Roland's have different strengths and signature sounds and sit in a different place in the mix and on stage but are, like Korg, primarily ROMplers.

The Motif series has been around a good long time, has extensive support and community and is available at several levels and price points. Were I to buy one today, I think I'd go for the ES level because it has an expanded (but not crazy amount of) performance elements included and gets you all of the capabilities of the original motif with some of the bugs (like midi latency) worked out. Price point on that should be comparable to Triton Extreme.

FWIW: If you have the supporting MAC for it, and are playing established sets in the same order every night, you may want to look at MainStage3. At just $30 plus whatever you pay for a MIDI controller, that program will let you do a lot of different things - ROMpler, straight samples and loops, drums, virtual analog, plug-in instruments and effects (+more) -- well worth a look and the sit-down time to get things working.

I think samplers will never be outdated as they are like chameleons can play any sound. Lately I hooked my Ipad 4 to TEX audio and usd inputs/outputs and tried to play some soft synths on Ipad. There are many synths in AppStore, but I liked "Addictive Synth"and "NLog Pro" most of all. Have sampled their sound easily. Ipad+Triton = Moss + Triton or even more. So give it a try. Very low latency and sound quality of Apple.

As to Kronos, I've read somewhere that they have dual core Intel Atom CPU inside, so basicaly it is a specialised PC..

I have yet to fully explore my TEX and I have had it since '07 !!

the thing is I was an early Midi/ATARI/MT32/PRO24 adopter and spent years creating my own sounds (over a 1000 for the Roland D series) using Steinberg Synthworks; BUT to just turn on the Extreme and add arpegs to get all the textures and THEN just control via the Ribbon control - every visit a new song /passage comes from nowhere!

Is the best Synth I have had to work with ever...
