This isn't a request for help, but an apology for being late with November and for not being around very much recently.
Hopefully things will get back to normal soon, and November is progressing slowly.
Cheers Simon

Hey, even if you're busy or don't have a song completed, do stop by and listen and comment as it helps us and may inspire you as well to get over the hump. It's a b*tch, trying to crank out these tunes every month and it really helps getting feedback.

I am totally in the dogbox this month - there's just no way I'll get something in for November unfortunately.

So I am also apologizing for letting you all (and myself!) down like this.

I never realised just how difficult it would be to change from the Triton seq to a DAW setup. It now actually feels easy  to record on the Triton - something I never thought I would be saying.

But I will definitely shout for help as and when I need it, which will hopefully be soon. Just heading for the end of the last teaching term of the year - 2 weeks to go.

Thanks guys, and yes I'll be catching up soon. Not all my net time allows sound to be heard which is restrictive.
Know the feeling Dee, and we are having fun as well as facing the challenge of writing/recording.
I'm been thinking about software recording again, mainly for the easier editing possibilities.

Dee,

Instead of DAW, your message should read..., O1W...and then you would have no trouble....

Welllll, elllll,

I have written a letter to Santa Claus asking for one of those for Christmas, but I guess it will depend on whether or not I have been a good girl this year....... :?

And anyway.....having an 01W isn't going to help me figure out how to do the DAW thing, is it... :D

I wish I were 9000 miles closer to you. Then we would hop on the ball and have you rolling out some tracks!

Seriously, if there is anything you need, I will help where I can.

I think that recording on a machine like the Triton and recording in a DAW are not too different once you determine what each thing represents. They have so much in common...in fact a sequencer is only a piece of software on an EPROM that drives the sound engine in your Triton. If you can wrap your head around picturing that EPROM out of the machine and on your computer you are 80% of the way there.

Jon's absolutely right.
I remember going through the transition, and being so overwhelmed, I didn't think I could actually ever wrap my head around software recording, now...I can't imagine how I got along without it.
You picked Pro Tools, and I wouldn't have recommended that for a first timer, but Hang in there, and ask, ask, ask, that's what I did.

One of the reasons I don't get anywhere is that I don't really know where to start. There's audio recording, and there's midi recording, and there's playback, and there's all the editing functions and modes and tools and, and, and...

However....today I took an existing song recorded on the Triton, just a few string and piano tracks, and imported the SMF version into PT.

To my surprise all is going well (MIDI is playing back perfectly through Triton) and I am trying to follow the procedure that Daz laid out for me in great detail many months ago. Nearly at the "rinse and repeat" stage

I now need to record each midi track into an audio track in PT. So here comes Dumb Question No.1 :D Do I create Stereo or Mono audio tracks?

(guess I would find that in my Pro Tools for Dummies book..)

Thanks for all your encouragement and help!!! and yes I also regret those 9000 miles.

Regards
Dee

If I were starting from scratch, basically where you are...

I would create a stereo track. Since you have the playback through the Triton, make sure it is hooked up to record to audio. Get the best patch for your sound and let it roll.

Then continue what you did and the above step, till you have a three or four track session with piano, strings, bass, etc. whatever the song calls for.

That is the best starting place if you are more comfortable recording MIDI than you are straight audio.

Thanks Jon - thought I would let you know that I spent some time having fun with the midi editing functions (I couldn't resist!) and even managed to record a new midi track or 2.

As Stephen has also said, it is really a different way of thinking.

I also discovered what Pro Tools' "undo" doesn't undo.... :? .....like when you delete all your tracks for example.... :D

It was weird because I had only selected one track (highlighted), but when I chose 'delete', all the tracks were deleted.

BUT.....I had fortunately done a save just before. And in case you or anyone is wondering if there was a question "Are you sure you want to delete ALL your tracks?".......it said something like "the selected tracks will be deleted - are you sure?" which didn't make me think the whole project would vanish.

Will let you know how the midi to audio goes, and thanks again for your help,

Posting Songs

Post by pwmccredie »

I have a question. What is the best way to post songs in here?

To those who dont know...I am probably the most cavemannish of us all in here (maybe not, I don't really know where everyone is at)

Point is..if you could gear your answer to someone who is not very computer/producing/mixing/recording savvy, I would appreciate it.

I do know how to get my songs into MP3 (it took me months), I just need to know the best way to post here.

Thanks,

PDubs

Well, you can create a free artist site at soundclick and post songs that way, that's a popular place.

So I went and did that. Now how do I get the songs into one of these posts?
