Unbelievable Oasys Price

Post by subeih »

Dear All,

I am about to buy a 76 Oasys from one of the biggest music stores in the US. I called one branch in Brooklyn, and was quoted 6,000 USD + Tax.

Then I called the same store (but my mistake) another branch of the same store, and I was quoted 5,000 USD + Tax. I wasn't sure so I requested them to send me an email with an official offer, and they sure did.

When I asked about the condition of the keyboard, wether it was in the showroom, refurbished,..etc, I received a reply from the store manager as follows:

"Don't worry!! The keyboard is brand new and not refurbished. What happens is, our company buys a certain number of keyboards from Korg to sell them. In some areas the keyboard may sell very well, while in others not so good, for example in New York / LA it sells very well because that's where the market is for this keyboard, but in locations like North Carolina or Oklahoma, it doesn't sell so well because people don't use those kinds of workstations in those areas. When this happens, locations like Oklahoma cannot receive new keyboards until keyboards like the Oasys are first sold freeing up the budget. That is why they lower the price."

I then called another famous store, and requested a quotation, I was given 6, 500 USD, I told them about the offer I received, they said this is way below cost, and the keyboard must be not working properly, used,...etc.

My question to all of you and in particular to Mr. Steven Kay, is this possible, is the price too good to be true, or it could happen. Is a new version being worked on and thus prices of current keyboards are down. Has the machine itself changed hardware wise since it's inception.

Your Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I myself bought the OASYS in a store that I didn't even know. I send an e-mail to a bunch of stores here, in Portugal (my home country), and got surprised with their price. I made the order... after just 2 or 3 months it was here. Everything went perfect... a store that I had never heard of in my entire life. :P The price was 6.125 euro and every other store questioned that price.

Wow, Euro 6000 for an OASYS 76 is way way too high. I bought mine here in the UAE (5% customs duty) for approx Euro 4120 nearly 2 years ago!! There was a music exhibition two months later and they were selling it for Euro 3500, for a limited time period only.

You guys are paying a whole lot, nearly 1.75 times, for the OASYS 76 if you're buying it for Euro 6000.

Mine was the 88 keys, nevertheless, 4120 Euro is a very, very low price... are you sure you're not missing any buttons? :P

Brand new, fresh out of the box, opened it myself at the local korg distributor, and installed the EXB-DI option there myself. Also, got a custom flight case built the following week. :-) Check the pics out http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/showthre ... eadid=7535

So, the only one who's ever touched it from the factory is me! :) I've modded it slightly by upgrading it's internal hard disk to a 60GB 7200RPM one, so all the samples and EXs load twice as fast, compared to the slowed 4200RPM drive that originally shipped out with it.

Make no mistake, I'm a stickler for details and never compromise quality for cost. That's why I bought the OASYS to begin with in the first place.

I've talked several people who got their OASYS from Guitar Center, for about $5,300. Starting about 6 months ago, I believe. No, this is not an official price, just as they sold $500 Alesis Fusions, but it seemed that the chain was liquidating this particular item.

Hi subeih, It is possible to get an Oasys 76 at 5300. I bought a new Oasys 88 for 5499 US before tax. It is working very well. No missing buttons, just new, warranty card and all. If you can, go and check it out see if the box has been opened or not. You will love the keyboard. Plus you are doing the right thing by asking questions on this forum. These guys here are wonderful they are like a small community of Oasys brethren. So go ahead and buy one and join us. 8)

I am wiring the money next week, after I get my bonus from my company.

I am so excited, I am the first to buy this keyboard in my country, and I expect it to be among three to five keyboards all over the middle East. I am so anxious to get it and I thank you for your comments, as I was a bit worried since the price was way below market price.

Thanks a lot

You live in the middle East, you say? Than the Oasys is the right thing for you! Got it? Middle East, desert, OASYS... :) Anyway, you won't regret it. Just prepare yourself for some serious music making.

Is there any documentation for how to do this? I'm sure I could figure it out but I really don't want to "experiment" with the Oasys (grin)

And can I put something bigger than 60Gb in? I would LOVE to make this change.

Hi,
I would recommend that you take it to your Korg distributor to upgrade the internal hard disk. You can put a higher capacity IDE 2.5" laptop HDD. I think you can easily get 160GB at 5400RPM.

Backup the data on your HDD first.

The procedure is to remove the left silver panel near the joystick by removing the 5 screws. After that look under the OASYS and remove the 4 black screws roughly arranged in the shape of a rectangle, that holds the hard disk plate attachment.

After removing the 4 screws, slide the HDD out, remove the HDD from the hard disk plate and replace with the new HDD and very, very carefully, slide the HDD plate back in, ensuring that the HDD IDE connector connects. Careful not to bend any pins and it all aligns up.

Boot the OASYS, to check it detect the HDD and if it does, put the HDD screws back on. After that, you can format the HDD and install the OASYS.

You can clone your OASYS HDD if you use Acronis Disk Director, so you dont have to move stuff around, but it's probably easier for you to backup your data.

Best regards,

Elvis, what about the OASYS EXi softeware that you have on your other drive?, surely this could get difficult up in the process?

You obviously have it working as one of your above post suggest RE: Faster loading of ""EX"" and samples.

Thanks for the tips. I have an old 160GB drive that I took out of my Mac Laptop (replaced with a 320GB) but I'm more interested in the speedup I would get by having a 7200 rpm drive.

I wonder if I can clone with Super Duper or does that only work with Mac formatted drives? (I think it does bitimages but I don't remember)

Anything is possible, but there would definitely need to be some special circumstances like you described.
subeih wrote: Is a new version being worked on and thus prices of current keyboards are down.
Korg never releases information about products under development. The official price of the OASYS 88 is still $8,499.

If there have been changes, these would be minimal. The big stuff (motherboard, CPU, memory slots) are all the same.
