OASYS user pissed off :-((

Post by oasys76 »

Hi all,

when I read everything for the m3 has been made, I'm pretty pissed off! All OASYS user have significantly more money invested and are now unfortunately waiting for general updates like the M3. Korg spend the M3 users tons of new sounds for free and the OASYS users?????? Korg unfortunately do not understand that we want no new Oasys! We still need updates for the current model perhaps you should in the future but rather wait and not equal to the most expensive workstation invest.

This has already been debated........and the thread has been closed......
There are mailny two position from where one can start evaluating the situation.

- Oasys is still (and far from the others) the best sounding, flexible and powerful WS in the market, even in the case it will be discontinued.

- Oasys has been marketed as a "developing open system" and now it seem (until Korg will undiscover its plans) to turn out as a mature close (to thirdy parts developer) system

The launch of the new "popular" WS, has probably and reasonably absorbed most of Korg's energy
I would wait the forthcoming months, to see if the Oasys Dream Team will implement these new features into big O-

My wish is that until Oasys has also been a platform to try new products (E.G. MOD7 which I do not remember being implemented in other Korg Products) and for which still exist a "beta tester group" in this forum , Korg will let us enjoy of other brand new features.

The M3 update should be seen as a "prophecy" of what is to come for the Oasys IMO, and as such is some of the best news we've seen for a while. This is not a time to be pissed, but feel considerably happier that Korg have the will and capability to make the kind of big changes to their sequencer that many folks have asked for. This should give people hope that your wishes can be fulfilled.

An Oasys update with M3 2.0 features (and more!!) is likely on it's way. On a side note ... even an update with the M3 1.0 features would be welcome; sound font support, higher seq resolution, drum track (for folks that like that kind of thing) etc.

As I say, the next Oasys update is probably a much bigger piece of work involving both Korg Inc and Korg R&D, and it probably wasn't a case of which to release first, but which could be completed first. The smaller thing won out ;-)

Daz,

What you say makes a lot of sense, and I think all of us Oasyians hope for that. Why shouldn't we?

But, I think the reason that people are afraid that nothing's gonna happen is the lack of the usual posts from Jerry, Dan, Ski, Stephen: "we can't tell you anything, but something's coming your way", or "we're overwhelmed with work, be patient" and so on. (Or did I miss something?..)

Anyway, best be patient and spend even more quality time with the Oasys.

Will they bite....wont they bite......oooh, the excitement :)

P.S. I am quite confident Korg will come through..or should I say 'bite'... so just be a little patient :)

LOL, those boys don't need to say "we're overwhelmed with work" ... we KNOW they are :-)

As for 'something is coming your way', Jerry did make a similar comment recently but was not that specific.

Here is what Jerry actually said :
TheGibster wrote: As you know, Korg does not speak about future plans, nor plans in progress. And none of us involved in the distribution, or development of Korg products can speak "out of school" as well. I can't violate that policy as I am an employee!

But I think it should be pretty clear to anyone with a business sense that Korg is working to drive even more sales of our current products, as well as supporting our customers. We're not a large company, so the balance of resources that work on products has to be spread around our various projects, both new, existing, and older. It's a balancing act and we try to do our best.

I am elated by the M3 developments. I was really quite concerned when the M3 was released and the sequencer and program editing arrangements (only Tone Adjust in Combi and Seq modes) weren't much different from the Triton Extreme. I thought Korg just didn't see these things as being important and they would never change. Now with the release of M3XP/OS2.0 it's clear that they don't have such entrenched views on these things and that what we'd read about about the sequencer being too difficult to radically change, or it not being worthwhile since everyone can just use a DAW, isn't the case. For people wishing for these improvements you should be resisting the need to faint with excitement at what is likely to be coming down the pike. The order of events is neither here nor there, in comparison to the magnitude of this seeming shift of priorities and willingness to react to the market and react to OUR feedback.

I lost faith that pressing Function + Program would let me edit a Program right in Combi or Sequencer mode, now I believe that may happen 'cos clearly Korg are listening and more importantly acting.

Hurrah !

I wonder how much of the M3 v2.0 improvements are a direct result from the user survey they asked us to take part in a while ago.

The survey was announced May 13, is that enough time to implement features in an update that was released 4 months later?..

Anyway, I am truly impressed by the customer care from this company. Yamaha is not so bad, Roland is horrible. (Meaning: Yamaha frequent the Motifator forum, Roland never does that over at Fantomized and V-Tribe).

But Korg really really shines.

Well, to play the devil´s advocate for a change, IMHO we have to understand statements like this from the OASYS community, and relate to them in a way, also.

Most users might be a litlle annoyed by the M3 2.0 EXpanded OS ; some less and some more, as we can see here as an example, in a quote from the M3 forum taken from a M3 owner , Rob Sherratt, who describes perfeclty what I´m triying to elaborate here:

Absolutely fantastic. Why would anyone want a Tyrannosaurus-3, with zero ability to survive the ice age, when the Ascent of M is already here Smile

I hope Frank ships my M3 before Korg USA double the RRP Smile

I do feel that by comparison with the M3 and M50, the Oasys has been left out in the cold. The Oasys is still the most upgradeable workstation in the world and it has a lot of life left. I might have been convinced to buy an Oasys instead of an M3 if there was evidence that Korg USA were still developing new facilities and add-ons for it.
The fact is that the M3, which was conceived and described by Korg as a system closed to its current posibilities derived from the OASYS, have received an update that enhances its environtmen radically as a workstation and as an instrument.

The OASYS, claimed by Korg to be an "open and upgradable system" hasnt received this update *yet*, being originally the plattform designed and able to recibe this kind of upgrades and updates, in Korg´s words.
This is one of the more important reasons (apart from its hadware and construction) why the OASYS cost a lot more than the M3, or at least thats what everybody thought to the present day.

Futhermore, the fact that the most celebrated features included free of charge in the M3 2.O OS are some of the most requested features the OASYS users have been asking for from the very early years of this instrument, including some of the top requested features regarding the Sequencer and its whole workflow as a workstation tool, makes this new M3 OS even more disturbing for many.

Now, what to expect for the OASYS user side?

The bet goes as follow:

1 - The big O hasnt recived this M3 EXpanded OS update yet, as it may be in early development stages, but it eventually will; even with something else along the way (EFx?)

2 - The big O will receive futher updates, like a new EXi, but not this M3 2.0 one, (no new sequencer edit facilities like Track View Screen, Piano Roll Edit Screen, MIDI SysEx Editing; no "drag and drop feaures" on its touch screen, no track velocity meters in Combi and Seq modes, etc.); in the same way the OASYS plattform hasnt received other features from the M3, the ones included in what Daz wisely has named M3 1.0 ( 480 PPQ resolution on Sequencer mode, Cue Lists, Drum Track feature, Sound Fonts compatibility, etc, etc)

3 - The current big O we have now will no receive any other mayor OS upgrade after 5 to 6 years of existence, and will be discontinued, yet in order to see the born of an OASYS II hadware version which might include *everything* this current model has as well as the M3 unique features; or the whole OASYS concept and development will be discontinued, to keep the war in the workstation market with the yet still upgradable, as we have seem, M3.

....

The truth behind all this is that the OASYS still is the magnificent instrument we have today, but its still capable of have a lot of future and development yet, if korg wants to.

But as I argumented in another post, this upgrade 2.0 for the M3 will affect OASYS sales and perception in the synth market, IMHO, and it will suffer because of it.

Again IMHO, now everything points out that Korg has its main focus on the M3 and M50, rather than the OASYS, and not only for this and past M3 upgrades, but for the silence we have all around the O all this time and the rumors we hear from the stores not to serve the OASY 76 any more.

We have Jerry´s words claiming that Korg resources are finite and needs to focus on Korg priorities and limited projects at a time, and we do belive him (I do for sure); but thats it, in the end, the market.
For those of us who spent over 7000$ for it is hard to realize it:
Everything seems to point out that the OASYS is not Korg priority nowdays. At least not the current priority.

Despite all of the above, I want to belive Daz when he says that seeing all those new features implemented in the M3 means half the way to have them in the OASYS.
Who knows? As he do, I do hope so.

Anyway, thank you for those of you who took the time to read these reflections.

Hi Daz

I know what you are saying, and I also notice this:

The M3 update should be seen as a "prophecy" of what is to come for the Oasys IMO,

How does this fit with a flagship model? Is it not in the wrong order you think? Maby the m3 is the flagship now?

Just my 2 cent Daz...

BTW: Did you release any combis for the oasys? I know you made some.

I believe the M3 was in need of a serious update to keep up with the competition from the other two. The Motif XS is very popular, and the Fantom G is new. As someone said earlier, we Oasys owner can only benefit from a raise in sales of the M3.

Also: the Oasys doesn't have any competition..

I really don't think the M3 has become the flagship, not by the traditional meaning of the expression.
Wikipedia wrote: A flagship is the lead ship in a fleet of vessels, a designation given on account of being either the largest, fastest, newest, most heavily armed or, for publicity purposes, the most well known.
The Oasys may not be the newest, but in comparison to the M3 it's definitely the most heavily armed ;-) Adding some very cool sequencer features and some nice new multisamples enriches the M3 a great but it's still an M3 at it's core and missing a lot of the features and qualities of the Oasys. I can only imagine there must be some misunderstanding of the power of the Oasys, when people compare it so unfavourably with the M3. Sure the sequencer doesn't have some of the great improvements, but that is only a part of the instrument.

BTW: Did you release any combis for the oasys? I know you made some.
Maybe you're thinking of Eric Sawyer, I don't make Combis in that sense. I just create multi-timbral setups in Combi mode as I am making music.

I have deliberately kept out of these discussions, but there's one thing I wish to say.
The business game can be played many ways, and there is always more than one correct answer. What I think is a viable strategy, and what I would simultaneously really like to see from a customers pespective, is a strong OASYS OS 2.0 in the current hardware, new ad campaign and a new round of reviews from the major magazines and e-zines.
