Sounds more like "filler" to me--like he just turned on some synths and played without much thought. Kinda hoped for more on a compilation CD.

Vangelis CD.....disappointed
I recently picked up a Vangelis "greatest hits" CD, but....other than "Chariots of Fire," "Albedo 0.39" (Pulsar), and some stuff from "Bladerunner," I wasn't impressed with the rest of the tunes.

Re: Vangelis CD.....disappointed
Well of course it's all totally subjective to each listener, but a few of his albums you might like might be:
(More analog synth based)
Chariots of Fire - the 20+ minute suite is a piano concerto with synth accompaniment, with the synths often sounding pretty orchestral...
BladeRunner
Antarctica - great atmosphere and nice study in different treatments of the same theme...
Opera Sauvage
(More digital synth/sample based)
Direct
1492
(if you'd like vocals over his music...)
Voices
Any of the Jon & Vangelis albums (The Friends of Mr Cairo, Private Collection, etc)
Without knowing exactly which CD you got, I don't know, maybe some of this stuff is on there and you didn't like it. But I'd say it's worth it to check out a couple of these albums to get a better idea if you'd like his stuff.
But then I'm a huge Vangelis fan.
I hope you find some more music of his to like!

Yes sorry, not sure the exact title of it.....the CD is in the car right now. I haven't listened to it in awhile. Perhaps I should give it another go.Sizul wrote:Without knowing exactly which CD you got, I don't know, maybe some of this stuff is on there and you didn't like it.

I bought 'The best of Jon & Vangellis' recently. now that was a mistake. now, I love stuff like Vangellis, and I quite enjoy Yes, but I hate jon's voice... no offence to him, but the music just didn't seem to fit together somehow. to be fair we bought the album not noticing the 'Jon &' bit...

That's understandable, X-Trade. Now "Private Collection" is my favorite J & V album...but I still remember the first time I heard it back around 1994, it was really a shock hearing vocals over Vangelis' music! I'd had a few Vangelis CD's by that time and Private Collection was the first J & V CD I got. I didn't have a reaction like hating it, it was just that I felt "this is weird!"
I had to listen to it a few times to get used to the idea of vocals over that music.
And I agree, Jon's voice can be hard to take for some, if only just because it's so high-pitched. But between listening to the J & V albums and Yes' 90125 I got used to it. And to me, 90125 and Private Collection have Jon's voice at its best. "Deborah" and "Italian Song" I'd have to say are my 2 favorite J & V songs, though I like several others a lot also.
Cheers,
Rob
