Pitchbend / joystick problem - SOLVED - Tutorial inside

Post by zolhof »

Hello,

My Oasys is 7 months old. I use it everyday at least 8 hours with heavy joystick usage.. a couple of days ago I started to notice that the joystick is a little bit lose and when I bend up it not returns to its 100% straight state, it feels a little bit out of tune, its just a bit but its annoying :(

I can manualy return to the straight position just by moving it a little to the left, but that´s very inconvenient.

I´m still on warranty but I´m so afraid to ship this monster and have some serious damage during transit.

What you guys think is happening?
Any suggestion?
Can I repair it myself?
Can I buy another joystick for the O?

Thanks

-----

Edit: just did this video to illustrate my problem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok4rlpq15_4

please help, it seems to be getting worse, I´m so sad

-----

Edit: Since I´m out of warranty and after reading about the O being disctontinued, I took courage and decided to fix it myself

It was a cheap piece if plastic afterall.. I couldn´t believe that Korg didn´t use a stronger material on the joystick, thats a shame

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnWAzlZ4iiQ

I documented everything as a future reference to any Oasys users with similar problem. I don´t encourage anyone to do the same unless you really know what you´re doing and have some knowledge about disassembling/assembling electronic equipment.

Remember to PAUSE anytime you need to read or look carefully at the pictures. That´s 4 hours of video footage edited under 10 minutes.

I´m pretty satisfied with the results! Remember that this was an improvised fix and worked for ME. Do it at your own risk.

Hope you enjoy it and never need to follow this guide! :)

-----

Edit: Here´s the definitive piece that I used to reinforce the joystick. My wife did most of the job on this one, it took almost 5 hours of modeling and sanding to get it right, but now it feels perfectly secure.

Maybe there is a service center not to far from you and you could take it to them. I know what you mean about size you need at least 2 people to move it.

Hi:

It's quite simple. I'm not having an oasys yet, but my trinity (90's oasys) had the same issue.

Solution: In global mode go to "calibrate joystick", but put the joy in the detune position first (i.e. at rest position when it sounds a little out of tune), and from there, move the joy to the same direction of the detune position (i.e. if the joy is a bit to the left, then move to the left first), and then to the other side.

Then go to combi or prog mode, move the joy and voila!!!, no more untuned O.

Of course, if you can send to repair or replace the joy or only the part that is loosen, then do it.

I only do what i do because there is not new joystick for the trinity anymore.

Desde Santiago de Chile.

thanks for your replies, unfortunately I can´t get it to a service center, I live too far from civilization lol

Is this a common thing to happen if you use your joystick a lot? Maybe i´ll just stock some joystick for the future :/

You will need to give KORG a call on this and see if they will cover you under the warranty.
The spring probably has stretched due to the amount of use you have given it, so see what KORG have to say on this first.

If they can't cover you under the warranty, then chances are you can order the part you need directly off them.

Regards.

Thanks for you reply Sharp. Just a small correction, I AM NOT on warranty anymore, I thought I had 12 months from Pride (Korg dealer in Brasil) but it´s just 3 months warranty.

What kind of warranty do I have from Korg? I bought my Oasys on September/2008. Who should I contact? Korg US may cover me if I need any part?

Your video was great, and witty! What is the main music bed? The drummer is great - I want to buy the CD!

I'm sorry that the joystick broke for you. I'm quite impressed by your resourceful repair job!

Were you unable to contact the Korg Distributor's support department, or were you able to contact them but they could not sell the parts to you?

The Korg Distributor for Brazil is:

PRIDE MUSIC
RUA PEDRO CACUNDA, 400 02046-090 SAO PAULO - SP BRAZIL

Zolhof, Good lad!! Excellent tutorial on this...just the 'still' pictures at the begining with the writing at the bottom is a bit too fast...have to rewind to read it. Anyway, very brave of you and the metal ring around the plastic great idea!!

My only concern was when i saw you put the metal ring on i thought to myself what if it comes into contact with a wire and causes electrocusion or a short or something like that, but seems all is ok.

The guitar playing in the background was great too lol

Thanks Dan, I sure did my best!

That music is great indeed, it´s Duende from Black Light Syndrome 1st album (Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin and Steve Stevens). Bozzio sounds like an octopus on drums

I emailed both Pride and Cesetec (Korg´s service center here) and got no response.. I´ll just keep trying

Thanks Billy!! That was the only way to fit such amount of info in 10 minutes.. you´ll have to pause sometimes lol

I was aware of the metal danger, but I checked over and over and over and there´s no chance of any wire contact the way its placed. I would never risk my beloved keyboard with such stupidity :P

Anyway, I needed a quick fix and now I have plenty of time to make a more "personalized" device to reinforce the joystick (on both axis), I´m already working on that

As I mentioned over at Karma Lab I also have some issues with my joystick, which I believe are because my Oasys was dropped (not by me!) and I think I'll be doing this fix at some point in the future, so I very much appreciated the time you took to make this video. Thanks again !

The joystick and the ribbon both feel like quite a different quality grade to the rest of the machine which is superb. I find the ribbon unusable with out using an AMS mixer for smoothing and it's not nearly as reliably responsive as the one on the Motif XS and similarly the joystick feels not nearly as good as the stick on something like the V-Synth GT.

And lacks of ribbon aftertouch, unlike the trinity, the only synth with that funtionality.

I´m glad i was able to help! In another thread you can download all the pictures I took to pre-analize what you may wanna do

Funny thing you mention the ribbon, mine works perfectly, but I always noticed a strange thing: for ex, when i put pressure and move my finger to the left, the ribbon "cover" makes a click sound an move 1mm to the left, like it´s a bit smaller than the ribbon "compartment" (did I make any sense at all?). This happens in both ways, its not often but it happens. Am I alone here?

And I couldnt agree more, the joystick and ribbon always felt low-quality compared to the rest of the O
