PA 500 strange midi behavior

Post by sergi »

Hi, everybody. I'm new here and expecting for some help. My set up is PA 500 + Logic 8 on G5. The problem comes when I try to playback SOME preset styles (Kool beat, or Unplugged1) recorded in midi. Guitar accompaniment ( midi channels 12-16) plays out of rhythm and out of tune. When I play alive everything sounds fine. Tried to reproduce recorded midi events with another preset styles - everything plays correct. Done everything I could imagine (have some basic midi knowledges) - change USB cables, change to MIDI-USB, reinstall Logic (twice), reinstall OS v.119 and resources on PA ( three times), tried different midi set ups - the same. Checked this forum all over to the page 60, danced around PA with tambourine - did not help. Some other preset styles reproduces in midi perfectly correct. and overall this is great instrument. Could be some OS issue or damaged hardware (memory chip)? Or..?
Any suggestions ? Thanks for advance.
P.S. Of course, midi driver is there.

May be it's because the Unplugged style is using "Guitar mode" types of tracks? There's some extra steps you need to take in order to get the guitar mode track types played correctly using an external DAW. I know I read that in the manual somewhere, but can't remember exactly what it is. Rikki must know this for sure.

I think that's why when you're trying to play other styles that are not using the guitar mode as part of their structure , eveything sounds fine. I don't even know if PA500 actually has the Guitar mode feature. Just a guess.

Hi, Sam.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, Pa 500 has all guitar track features. I'm digging manual now, but all guitar track edition can be done in style record mode, not in style play. Anyways, have no choice, will try solve it.

At least now you know that the hardware failure is not causing this. I sent a PM to Rikki, and she might know the answer. It's been a long time since i've seen this, but I know for fact that there was a little section in PA800 manual talking about the Guitar mode using an external sequencer.
In those kind of guitar tracks, you have some Ghost notes that are not suppose to be heard. That's why the track has to be set to Guitar type, otherwise the keyboard will play them back just like any other note and you've got a mess instantly. Until you get a response from someone try and see if you can locate that section in the manual.

Just a quick search in the manual (PA800) turned up with the page that I was talking about:

"Note: When programming a Guitar track from an external
sequencer, you must be sure the Guitar tracks is associated to the
right channel. Go to the Global > MIDI > MIDI IN Channels page,
and assign the corresponding Style track (usually Acc1 ~ Acc5) to
the same channel of the Guitar track on the external sequencer.
Then, go to the Style Record > Style Track Controls > Type/Tension/
Trigger page, and set the track as a track of type “Gtr” (see
“Track Type” on page 134)."

I think it would be a good idea if people who actually experimented with this give us some information.

Some additional info. Changed instruments on ch.15-16, when mess occurs - the same result. Hooked up PA to my friend's iMac Logic 9 - exactly same. My friend's PA1x Pro works in plug and play style with any problem. We compared ALL setting on his and mine keyboards - spent 4 hours - nothing.
Seems like some software bug and the best way to fix it - connect to Korg service center. But this is another story. I called to Long Island (I live in Brooklyn NY) service center and they don't let me bring the instrument, till they recreate the problem themselves. Nice, ah? I bought keyboard brand new 2 month ago in B&H on 34 street Manhattan, for full MSRP price and I don't expect the unit costs 1 grand brings 4 thousand dollars unit functions. I need just simple basic midi function works correct. Sad.
