There were two moss-based expansion boards for the Trinity.

SOLO-TRI = 1-voice Korg Prophecy emulation
MOSS-TRI = 6-voice Korg Z1 emulation

Only one can be installed at any one time. They are also both incompatible with each other (you can't load MOSS sounds onto the SOLO board, and vice versa).

I outlined the differences between the two boards here:

Well what i wanted to know more than anything is, can the moss be installed in a 1.0 machine?

the z1 that is, i remember the trinity v3, was it diff hardware, or just a new os?

From what I have read, i would not be happy with the moss, as it sounds thinner and not as gritty.

Probably not, as the Solo and Moss expansion boards came after the original Trinity was released, so a later OS might need to be installed for the Trinity to see and use the boards.

The MOSS-TRI board definately requires OS v3, though.

The "Trinity V3" is just a basic Trinity but with the MOSS-TRI expansion board installed, and with the OS updated to v3 in order to use the MOSS-TRI.

You cannot, however, install OS v3 onto a Trinity without the MOSS-TRI...

...Well you can, but you wont gain anything, as it wont be able to 'see' the MOSS-TRI if you don't have one installed inside. Additionally if you tried to sell the keyboard off as a Trinity V3 without the MOSS board then you'd stand to be in very hot water.

If instead you have a SOLO-TRI board installed instead, then you still need to downgrade the OS to v2.4.1 otherwise the Trinity wont be able to see the SOLO board, even if you have one installed.

If you don't have either MOSS-TRI or SOLO-TRI installed, the latest OS is still v2.4.1

By the way, OS v2.4.1 and OS v3.1.2 are identical, other than OS v3.1.2 supports the MOSS board. That is the only difference.

To recap, the "V3" moniker along with OS v3 and above is for Trinitys with MOSS-TRI only. For all other Trinitys you should use OS v2.4.1.

Personally I wouldn't use OS v1.0 for anything. Later OSs have performance benefits (LCD refresh speed), bug fixes, and new functionality.

Horses for courses. I have both boards and swap them occasionally (along with having to swap the OS where needed). While the SOLO does sound slightly sweeter to my ears, the benefit of the MOSS's 6-voices of polyphony over the SOLO's single voice wins me over, and also for the additional physical models that the MOSS has over the SOLO.
