stereo/mono issues

Post by CoelBliss »

I have a feeling this can get fixed pretty easily. i have my kaoss pad running in the effects loop of my mixer. one quarter inch on the out of the loop goes to the line in RCA inputs on the kaoss pad, and then the dual RCA outputs on the kaoss pad go into two 1/4" inputs on the effect in part of the loop. when i do this, the samples that i record only play back through the left speaker, but the rest of it will play in stereo, such as the bass, drum, and synth sounds that are already in the kaoss pad. if i want the samples to play in stereo i have to unplug the right input that the kaoss pad is plugged into on the effects loop of the mixer, making it come through both speakers. any advice?

Is it because you're only feeding the KP3 with a mono signal and the left input on your return to the mixer acts as the mono input and will duplicate the signal to be in both speakers (so not techncailly stereo)?

so you're using one jack for the send and two for the return?

does the mixer have a stereo send? if it does, then that's the problem. You're only sending one channel to the KP3, so what the KP3 receives (and samples) is only half a stereo signal. You're sending two channels back, so the KP3's internal sounds are stereo.

It Sounds like the mixer notices when you only use one return, and as Mr36 says, duplicates that mono signal on both channels.

My advice would be use a stereo send (if your mixer supports it) or use an RCA to mono jack Y-cable to combine the two KP3 outputs into a mono signal, and put that mono signal into the mixer's return jack (which it will then duplicate to both channels)

You are absolutely right. It takes the mono signal sent from the kp3 and puts it through both speakers, so yea not technically stereo. There is no stereo send on the mixer so I guess my best bet is just to run the kp3 in mono, otherwise there is a very significant volume difference. It won't be true stereo, but that mono signal, but it'll sound fine for what I do. Thanks everyone!

well yea actually it doesnt have a stereo out function on the effects loop, but what i have is a 1/4" that goes into dual rca that i plug into the line in on the kp3 coming from the effect out on the mixer. i guess even though it changes into two cables it would still receive the signal mono because its only coming from one 1/4" jack maybe? im not sure. maybe theres even soemthing wrong with the cable, or maybe this is just how it works.

any other ideas?

no, that's what I'm confused about - a mono 1/4" jack to dual RCA should duplicate the same mono signal on both the L and R rca aoutputs

are you sure you have a mono jack to rca, not stereo to rca? (although, IIUC it shouldn't matter, because the tip and ring of a stereo jack should both make the same contact)

that may actually be part of the problem. looking at my adaptor it looks like its a trs cable, so does that mean it needs to be mono since it is a mono output from the mixer and a trs cable just wouldnt be the right thing?

heres what i think it is although mine looks a little bit different, in that the 1/4" jack is black on mine not reddish orange, but the connection is the same:

so i guess that could be part of the problem right? or no. i dont know.

so it goes from the quarter inch on that adaptor into a dual rca cable that i already had, i have two of them and i tried them both and the both did the same thing, and then the rcas into the line in on the kaoss pad. funny thing is that when its set up like it should be, color to color, red to red, white to white, the sound only comes out through the left speaker. i tried this, just because, and i changed it so it went from red to white and white to red and it came out through the right speaker only. same things happen when i switch the cords on the adaptor itself. once again, no matter what, the drums and synth stuff that is already in the kaoss pad come out stereo no matter what. it is just the samples that i am having problems with.

im thinking that maybe a stereo jack might not be receiving the right signal, or its trying to separate out the signal when i just need it all to go in one direction, so maybe i need a mono 1/4" to dual rca. when i said mine looked similar other than the color, i meant it, same trs look.

yes I would suggest trying a mono 1/4" jack to dual RCA

if the mixer send is mono, use a mono jack

Yes - Ensure it's a 1/4" mono jack to 2 RCA jacks and not a 1/4" stereo jack to 2 RCA jacks.
(These are usually used for Channel Insert purposes.)
