The game has NOT changed yet afterall...

Post by dranandj »

Here are some random thoughts that are keeping me sane after the release of kronos.

1. Oasys is not a computer. It is a music keyboard workstation which is pretty stable and does the job that is meant to do. It was when I first bought it and it still does. It is surprising to see some people keep referring to the processor, speed and RAM etc to convince themselves and others that oasys has depreciated in value. Once again OASYS is one of the best Keyboard workstations and if you've not managed to create/learn from having an oasys, you are unlikely to create masterpieces suddenly with a 16ghz quad core processor, 500gb RAM and SSD's oasys III which is sheduled to be released in 2015 winter NAMM in russia. .

2. It is always a marketing strategy to say that the new product sounds better. Honestly I am happy with the oasys sounds and don't find any significant difference between the two with whatever I've heard so far. Even if I am wrong, the difference would not be noticeable in a song that has been mixed well. stop getting sucked into their game. Korgs achievement is oasys NOT kronos.

3. Oasys's got ALL the synths that kronos has and there is definitely not going to be any sonic difference in synth sounds. And oasys samples are still good sounding and it more than enough to inspire creativity and compose beautiful songs with big sounds.

4. I had bought oasys for a lot of money, and I am unlikely to part with it for peanuts in order to buy a cheaper model of the same. I might as well save money and buy kronos as an addition if I really want one.

5. Most musicians are emotional creatures and would have grown attached to the instrument that they've lived with for almost 5 years in some cases. some of us must have tweeked around and made new sounds that we are proud of.

6. ADAT IS important for live mixing when you want to use combinations and may be KARMA.

7. Of course atleast for some of us rubber the pads are a great tool of creativity and have used it even in live situations and it is always better when you can physically feel the pad with your fingers than a on a touch screen interface which by the way also greatly limits what else you can have on the screen.

8. People who would go and buy kronos are mostly new users who have either very little clue about the oasys or could not afford to buy one in the past. Having said that, oasys has been selling for ~£3500 on ebay for a few years now. People who could not afford that would still not be able to afford 88/76 kronos especially in these difficult times unless you are a banker who has been robbing people for ages! Oasys is still one of the amazing machines that was truly ahead of its times when released. It still is and it continues to inspire new so called game changers! :D.

9. Oasys is still open architecture. So atleast theoretically krog can still decide to release a software upgrade with some of the features that we have been asking for and some new features from kronos. It is only logical that there is going to be a KARMA upgrade to the oasys at some point, and I guess it will all come in a bundle. If it does, it will further increase the value of oasys and will make it better than it already is. My premonition says that a silent software upgrade is imminent though. :3dangel:

10. Oasys looks and feels like a professional workstation (esp. with the tilt screen and the sides, and of course the rear that the audience get to see). OASYS has a 'presence' both on and off stage unlike Kronos that looks like any other common keyboard on the market (even meeker than some).

Having said all these I am selling one of my 2 oasys's for other reasons and may be in the future I will think of getting the baby kronos if I really like it mainly for DAW integration in my studio. Otherwise I am quite happy with OASYS and don't care even if it would't sell. In any case, I would always keep my other oasys which will remain my main workstation for years to come.

finally when it comes to creating something, Keyboard is only a tool. ultimately its you who has to create. OASYS is still one of the best tools available and I doubt kronos has really changed the game yet.

While I'm agreeing to many things you've said I don't believe the slogan was targeted at the Oasys but at the other workstation producers. Compared to current Roland and Yamaha products Korg has changed the game indeed. Or at least they have changed some of the criterias products will have to fullfill from now an if they want to keep playing the game.

I think Kronos offers some very nice extras if you want to play live: seamless switching from sound to sound, streaming, less weight ... but if one doesn't play live it boils down to sonic quality. And this issue was not clarified yet: does Kronos sound as good as the Oasys or even better? If so: is it an audible difference ... that is, can one hear it in a mix? Personally I doubt that and agree to what you've said: Oasys sounds great and will not be the constraint in creating masterpieces in your studio. It's more likely that oneself's creativity and musical abilities will be the constraint.

Nevertheless I'm still waiting for a nice A/B-comparison between identical sounds on the Kronos and Oasys + some reliable comments of people with fine ears having played both machines.

What a great and well reasoned post, dranandj.
I susbcribe everything you have said.

Agreed on this one especially.

Besides, as you both say, its better to wait an try Kronos to really be aware of its quality, and that will take a little, yet.

Dan has commented on the sonic quality and stated it's the same (same converters and same algorithms). For me as an Oasys user it seems Kronos is not an issue for the time being. Might have another look at it once I play more on stage again (I don't like carrying my Oasys 88 around  ).

Until then I'm looking forward for more objective and subjective comments on the sound quality of both machines and a comparison between identical sounds. Furthermore I expect Kronos developments/updates if it becomes a really successful instrument (which I believe to happen). Perhaps Kronos I will be replaced by an improved Kronos II much faster than Oasys production was discontinued.

I do a lot playing live with my O 76 and I´ve managed playing live even without setlist and drop out when switching sounds ;-)

After all I love the handling and surface/look of the O. I don´t think that Kronos has the better surface.
