€ 271 Euro for 88 Key case.

Post by Sharp »

Hi all.

Just browsing through the Thomann website and I spotted this.

http://www.thomann.de/ie/thon_case_iii_ ... sys_88.htm
€ 271 Euro for 88 Key case + free delivery.

That's a pretty fantastic deal to be honest.

I'd order one myself only my OASYS will never leave the Studio. If I was going gigging again I'd buy something that offered HDR so I could bring the sound of the OASYS with me.

Regards.
Sharp.

Just a warning from little 'ol me: 32.1 kg for the O + 24.3 kg for this case is 124.4 pounds - well over what all the major airlines will let you travel with per package (100 pounds seems standard). Many people won't need to fly with it, but in my case, I literally had to remove the joystick assembly to get my O and case (case is in storage, can't remember the model) under the limit to bring them from the USA to Brazil. I researched this a lot at the time, and best I could tell, the consensus was that if you travel with the O, get a 76-key version to avoid airport problems.

BTW, what's HDR - hard disk recording ?

Yes, it's a great way to bring the sound of your entire studio with you on the road gigging.

Considering its not fully foam lined, wouldn't trust that case to be very road worthy,if anything punctures the case theres little protection to stop the Keyboard being damaged given where the foam is located,if it receives a blow in the wrong place you could kiss goodbye to your Screen.. so doesnt look like it would provide a snug fit or much protection

I've always bought my cases from FCWH,very efficient and they've always had everything I need either in stock or ready within a couple of working days and they foam the cases to your exact requirements, and its fully foamed protecting the whole keyboard, they even refoamed a couple of original cases I hadn't bought off them.

Back when I was buying one for my Triton Studio I asked Thomann why they didn't cover the entire case with foam and they said that any case that had full foam presses against all the knobs and buttons. During transport there will always be some level of moment and if the foam is pressing against knobs, sliders and buttons, it will cause damage to them over time.

So for the likes of the OASYS case above the OASYS is a good 50mm away from any wall of the case with the likes of the screen a good 30mm away from the sides too.

The foam in the case I have is not so tight you have to wedge it in,there is some tolerance, and also the foam should compress before its causing any pressure against buttons/Dials or whatever else its protruding etc,so the buttons are not being pressed or anything being forced against the tension of the padding, the foam is shaped around the keyboard,so its actually more like a mould not just simply an airtight fit. much of the foam fitted to cases are simply not up to the job and just a standard shape.

what I'm saying is that from past experience,I had a case puntured after another case was dropped onto it,this had the same spec as this one on thomann without hardly any foam other than some supporting padded foam in the middle and on the corners.

the fibreboard(outershell) because there was nothing supporting it inside of the case in terms of Foam inside where it had been impacted to cushion the blow, caved in and damaged the keyboard, the foam isn't simply to keep the keyboard in place it also will act as a shock absorber.

I've also paid for a little extra to have Aluminium sheet covering the fibreboard for extra rigidity support

Buy either of these cases, place your Oasys in it and jump up and down a few times...see which one will incure the most damage!I know which one my money would be on,the foam snug fit and support in my case is the difference between shot wearing a Bullet proof vest to absorb the impact or not wearing one and let your skin and bones absorb the impact!!

Sharp,

I have an SKB molded case with internal foam that I use for either my T1 or my Oasys 88. It's now 15 years old and has traveled a lot and never had a problem of any kind with it.

I agree with Kontrol, interior foam that is flexible is a desirable thing to have.

Guys, all I'm doing here is pointing out a good deal and explaining why they don't cover the inside completely with foam. Don't shoot the messenger if you don't like what you see.

I'm just trying to be helpful here.

James,

No-ones shooting you down and no-ones saying its not a good deal, the premise I'm putting across here is in providing maximum protection for such an expensive item like the Oasys,I've had experience of casings being damaged, that I would opt for a more secure lining than a few pads, and even more so with a £5k machine to the point where I would pay a little extra for something to be made to fit to give ultimate protection rather than a simple off the shelf item which would be ok and suitable if your a few gigs now and then at the Working mens clubs person.

Sharp,

I'm sorry if you felt I was knocking you. That was certainly not my intention, just merely giving my first hand experience.
