KP3 to master in Ableton

Post by xRollinx »

Howdy all, noob here.

I'm trying to setup my KP3 with my audio interface (M-Audio ProFire 610) so that I can use it to add effects to the master audio channel. (not interested in using it as a midi controller)

1. How should I connect the KP3 to the interface? What inputs/cables do I use? KP3 has Line in/out (L/R) whereas interface has 1/4" connections and s/pdif in/out...

2. Once connected properly, how do I setup KP3 with Ableton so that everything that I play live is affected by the KP3?

The goal is to use a bunch of softsynths (played via midi controller on my Macbook) and use the KP3 as effects on top of everything that is played before it goes out into the speakers.

Here's my rig setup if it helps:

Macbook Pro
Novation SL MK2
M-Audio ProFire 610
KP3

I think you sort of answered your own question...
... before it goes out into the speakers ...
You can get 2x 1/4" jack to 2x phono cables... Get two. One to go from audio interface out to KP3 in and the other to go from KP3 out to your speakers (assuming your speakers have 1/4" inputs).

Is there a way to loop it back into ableton so that the effects can be recorded? I think it may have something to do with using the external audio plug in and looping it back to the interface (from the kp3), but I haven't figured it out yet.

Does anybody know?

I am trying to use it from a producer's angle, so I can add effects in real time outside of the box.

From the Ableton Forum, and what helped me:

"But to use it as an effect, here is what I did.

Setup a new return track and add 'External Audio Effect' from the Audio Effects plugins.

Wire up 2 of your soundcard outputs to the left/right inputs on the kp, and the 2 outputs of the kp to 2 inputs of your soundcard.

For example I used channels 5&6 (in and out) of my soundcard.

Then set the input/output channels on your External Audio Effect plugin to use the same.

On the track ouput settings, set it to Sends Only and dial up the send dial to your return track."
