Who says Kronos has poor quality guitars!??
Some recent talk inspired me to put the following mix together:
http://soundcloud.com/ronf-3/midnight
What is interesting here is that Kronos guitars and my $3000 Cordoba Gypsy Kings Nylon (mic'ed by a AKG C1000S) are mixed side by side, which makes for a great comparison. Only the lead line in the first verse is the real guitar....everything else, including the rhythms and lead in the second verse, is Kronos, all controlled by a Steinberger ZT3 with Roland GK2a for midi conversion. I spent a good amount of time EQ'ing the Kronos guitars to mix well with the real thing. IMHO...EQ is the secret to bringing Kronos guitars closer to an authentic sound. Kronos guitar patches are naturally very full bodied, with booming low end. They need to be controlled, and compressed! But the result, to my ears, is very satisfying. Its not intended to be "solo" perfect......but it fits the song with nice realism, I think.

This mix sounds very convincing, Ron. You have once again proven that taking the time to shape the sound into the result you're looking for is the trick to taking the standard patches of the Kronos and molding them into much more realistic sounding instruments. However, it should be noted that in order to attain the kind of quality you've achieved, you need to start with a patch that sounds fairly realistic to begin with. This is where Kronos patches are superior than many other synth's out there... you've simply worked with those patches to give them a more unique and realistic sound (I shouldn't use the term "simply" as I know how much time must have gone into this).RonF wrote:Who says Kronos has poor quality guitars!??

Once again, well done Ron

Just listened and I agree the guitar sounds very realistic. Excellent work Ron! Perhaps you could share which Kronos program you used as a base. The results of your edits plus your good technique speak for themselves!

Thank you kindly! I did not use a Kronos preset directly, rather, I created an HD-1 program using wavesequences I-46 through I-51 as the Oscillators. The factory preset which is most similar to this sound is Int D-19 Nylon Guitar, which uses the same/similar Osc sources. But the factory envelopes (both filter and amp) and drive/boost settings need tweaking for sharper attack and drive at higher velocities. The EQ needed a lot of tweaking, especially in the low register, which I also used multi-band compression to control. I also don't like the sound of Chorus effect on natural synthesized guitars, and many Kronos programs use it! This serves to muddy the attack to a less natural tone. Finally the reverb on the factory patches is too booming on the low end, and needs to be EQ'ed and damped to work in a mix and sound more authentic. Some of these changes are subtle, but with an acoustic guitar patch, where (traditionally) 6 voices will ring out at once (and remember I triggered this with a "midi guitar"), those subtleties quickly amount to a cumulative mess if not brought under control.rmvieira wrote:Just listened and I agree the guitar sounds very realistic. And perhaps that is a big difference of how a guitar player actually plays and the number of voices that consistently ring out, vs how a keyboard player might play a guitar patch, perhaps with fewer cumulative voices, and therefore the patch relies more on effects to thicken the sound, albeit less natural sounding.
Anyways....for a quick idea of what I did, go to INT D 19 Nylon Guitar and tweak away. I used two variations of this patch, one for the lead in second verse, and one for the rhythm guitar throughout. I also used a variation on INT D 40 Piezo+Pickup Guitar for the electric guitar rhythms.

Thanks for noticing.
I have been uploading updated version of the song last night and did not notice that it has been cut....
Soundclick allows to upload file larger than 10Mb, but then it cuts without warning....
Not it is fixed...

As an example from the other thread about how to post a soundcloud imbedded link.....
Using Safari 5.1.4 on OSX 10.6.8...all I see in the above post is:
"<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=htt ... "></iframe>" (sans the quotation marks at the boundaries)
The link is not executable either. I still say the best and most universal way to post a soundcloud file is to use a simple jump link.
Unfortunately....I cannot listen to your music!
