Musician chain (community project)
Hi all,
I'd like to propose a fun idea. A musician chain is a project (a song) thas is passed on from one to another where every person adds/changes something.
I'd like to start such a chain with Kronos owners by passing on a sequence file here over the forums.
Basically, it will work like this:
- The first person who posts a commitment to a change has 1 week of time to record
- After 1 week, the committed user posts his changes back to the forum, to be used by the next person
- If the user did not post a change, the second poster will get 1 week to record and send his idea
- repeat step 1
Obviously there are some ground rules:
1. Each person is allowed to make 2 changes:
- Add a new track/instrument
- Replace 1 track/instrument (ie improve the drum track or piano track)
2. All recordings made are licenced under CC (creative commons), every means to exploit this project commecrially is not permitted
3. You can use midi tracks or audio tracks to record other instruments (sax, guitar, percussion or any other object producing sound) but using synths other then Kronos is not allowed.
4. The lead track should eventually be replaced by vocals, but I don't have any lyrics
I'm leaving on holiday shortly, but in the meanwhile I'd like to poll for the community's interest on this. I'll start up this project next week!

Sounds like fun, I'm really interesting in the result.
However, I am afraid I cannot participate, not only because I have very limited experience with composing/DAWs but too many other things to do.

It would be nice to post every difference so we can have a 'live' discussion about the progress (and I assume everybody likes remarks).

I'm definitely interested.
I actually proposed this idea in 1997 on the fledgling Korg Trinity mailing list. I started and organized it and submitted the first track on a song. Unfortunately, many people dropped the balled and my particular song was never completed (by others).
So years later I went back and completed my own song.
Anyway, I still think it is a great idea but have a back-up plan (pass on to the next person) when someone drops the ball.

I think the week to finish a part is a good idea. On the other hand, what if someone spends a lot of time but just hasn't finished? Though one week might be enough (and maybe a few days extra can be 'claimed' if needed).maphill wrote:I'm definitely interested.

One time I did something with a picture (photography course), someone made a picture, then another made a picture somehow connected to the first etc. Not all deadlines (also one week) were possible, due to busy schedules etc.

Nice to see some people have shown interest. I'd like to respond to a few ideas and add a few more remarks:
1. The 1 week deadline is to provide healthy motivation to anyone who says he's going to add something. I don't want the project to slow down because a user is keeping everyone waiting.
If a user can somehow prove he's made progress but can't finish in time, I guess the deadline can be extended another week.
Ideally, a user can receive the project monday morning, and he can send the file back sunday evening, which means he can work on the project during the weekend.
If monday morning someone says he wants to make changes, I assume he checked his agenda so he can make time during that week. Don't post if you know you won't have time that week...
2. I will provide technical support as much as possible. I will make sure people getting the most recent version of the sequence and make sure they can send it back to me.
I will mixdown every version and post it to my soundcloud account, and keep a history overview on the forum on who made which changes.
3. Some additional rules that I forgot to mention:
- Only record a MIDI track if you use a default program, record audio tracks otherwise.
- Making changes to the song structure is not permitted. (no, you can't insert 70 measures with an epic lead solo!)
4. About the song
I prepared a fairly simple song with a very basic structure and very simple chords. I've recorded 4 basic tracks: piano, bass, drum and lead. All these tracks should eventually be replaced by the community.
The structure is as follows:
- 4 measure intro
- 2 verses (8 measures each)
- Chorus (24 meaures)
- 2 verses
- Chorus
- 2 solos (similar to 2 verses, 8 measures each)
- Chorus
- Ending (6 meaures, slows down in the end)
I will post the song asap so people can listen to the basic track before volunteering...

I just created the thread for this:
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... 987#479987
First one to reply as a volunteer will get 2 weeks to make the first change to the song.
Make sure to listen to the song before volunteering. You might not like what you hear! (I know the drums are a bit messy) :p
