Is it possible to automate volume crescendo within a program

Post by Dniss »

Hi guys, I've been trying to figure if it's possible to do the following:

When I press a chord, I'd like the volume to go from 20% to 100% in say 2 seconds.

Like some kind of volume crescendo.

Any ideas if it's possible and if yes, what would be the easiest way to do this?

Note- It will always be the same 3 or 4 chords that keeps repeating in a song.

Don't know if there is any parameter to do that, but you could try with the aftertouch maybe?

You can use the A(B)DSR levels for this. However you also can do it manually as said above. With aftertouch may be a bit difficult to regulate exactly, but the ribbon or a knob could be used for it, just set the AMS (Alternate Modulation Source) of the volume parameter(s) to the controller (ribbon/knob). I'm not sure exactly which parameters you have to change, but probably it's called somethign like level/volume on the Basic tab. It might differ if you use EXi's.

Thanks for your kind answers guys.

Can't do that manually, I already have to do other stuff with my right hand. I need a third hand!
:)

I will keep looking, if you guys have other suggestions, please do. That could prolly be done with Karma but I have enough on my plate right now before learning that. lol

And what about an expression pedal to control your volume?

Well I already have a Korg volume pedal. Are you referring to that?

It would be too difficult to obtain constantly similar results this way and I have to play other stuff with my right hand also, which I don't want the volume affected.

Yes, it is possible to do this. As Michel said, you need to edit the AMP Envelope's Attack Time. (You might also need to adjust the Filter EG to match... depending on the sound.)

But we don't have enough information to help you properly. For instance, do you want the crescendo (swell) to happen exactly the same way every time you play any note/chord? Or do you need some notes/chords to play at full volume quickly and others to swell?

If it's the former, adjust the attack time of the AMP EG.

If it's the latter, then you can use velocity as an AMS source to modulate the attack time -- it's probably the easiest.

You can also edit these attack values using the real time controls, or even better using tone adjust in a combi, so you don't have to modify the actual program.

There's definitely no shortage of EG's for most program types so this sounds like the best way to do it. Most of the AMS parameters have values that extend into the seconds range so it should be a trivial bit to get the crescendo you're looking for. You can apply the AMS directly to the volume, attenuator or amp mod (depending on the engine you're in it may be called something different and appear on a different page). For some programs you may need to replicate the AMS settings for each oscillator to get the results you want and depending on the relative settings of the oscillators you may have to scale the AMS for one oscillator versus another.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys!

Honnestly, I'm not too familiar with everything you guys are suggesting but let me do my homework and take it from there.

Any synth engine it would work best with, before I select a program?

Understanding envelope generators, whether they are amp, filter, or pitch EGs, will be vital if you are going to do any sound programming or modifications. They are not difficult to understand. You can search on Google or YouTube for countless tutorials.

Here's one that came up when I just searched YouTube (I didn't watch the whole thing):

and here's another, which is a bit weird but kind of cool:

There is also the common Mod/step sequencer. I've used this before to mimic paraphonic envelopes.

If you are trying to do a volume swell with the left hand and not on the right, I would just make a combi using the sound in the first 2 tracks/channels and have the volume pedal only affect the sound that you want it to. You probably have to make a split somewhere so that the 2 sounds don't overlap.

I have a bunch of layered piano sounds that I can't fade in or out strings or choirs.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!

Use an expression pedal, set is as expression (I think it is CC11), then in the combi, set your right hand sound to ignore Expression CC11 and for the left hand enable it (it can be done in the MIDI filters).
