Which engine?

Post by Bertotti »

would a person use to try and do what the Nord wave does? Mod7? I dont really know how the wave did what it did but I did like what I heard from it.

Personally, I have no experience with Nord Wave. However, reading the features, it isn't even close to MOD-7

If you need to compare, it's actually with AL-1 with some extras (sample playback and wave tables) which are covered (with huge excess) by HD-1

Lastly, you need to understand that every synth is different and allows you to get results in different ways. This without considering the "flavor" imparted by the filters, for example.

Looks like a case of info overload. I tried to read to much in a day perhaps. I thought the items you listed were mod7. I will go read Al1, makes sense now that it wasn't making sense. Thanks!

It depends if you're wanting to use the sample playback functionality of the Wave or the analog modeling. Remember that Nord built their foundation on emulations of "certain American, wooden-sided polysynths of the '70's" (read: Prophet 5) and, in fact, the Nord Lead 2X was shipped with the entire Prophet 5 sound bank loaded into its memory. With that in mind, you should focus on filter selection in whichever engine you choose. There is an option called "Full" in the resonance character section of most of the filters in the Kronos (as opposed to "Tight") and this setting corresponds with the "wooden-sided American polysynth" filter characteristics.

This filter type is available via AL-1- which is strict analog modeling- as well as in MOD-7- which allows a PCM waveform to be used in the signal path. I'm not certain how flexible the Nord Wave is as a sampler/sample playback synth but these 2 engines should be your starting point as you figure out how the filter should sound.

Best of luck! Cheers!
