Kronos Dropped :(

So I put the Kronos 88 into my Gator case, got distracted in a conversation and proceeded to wheel it off when (I realized I didn't latch the cover) it fell out of the case onto the hard (laminate) floor - side of the keyboard first, then onto the keybed side. Dents on the laminate flooring, a couple of knobs knocked loose onto the floor. My heart sank

I put the knobs back on, didn't see any cracks or obvious damage... so I took it and set it up again to see if it still powered on and played.... it did.

While it seems to be ok... I wonder if there's anything I should be looking out for in particular. All the keys work, the LED's seem to work, the sliders aren't so smooth anymore, the x-y lever makes a click when being moved from the left side... don't know what else yet.

Of course this all happened on a Friday, when I wouldn't be back again until Monday. Well, today is Monday and I set it up again... so far, it seems to work with the exceptions of the roughness in the sliders and the x-y stick.

It seems usable.... but I'm wondering if I should take it in to my service center to have it looked at and checked out. I know I'd be at the veterinarian if I dropped one of my dogs... but dogs have a system that can heal itself most of the time... the Kronos doesn't have that

What would you do?

Well I ain't normal, I would open it myself and see what I can see. Those not so tech savy, well I would say take it to a tech, if things aren't smooth like they were then somehing has changed.

Ouch.... very sorry to hear this.
I would strongly recommend bring it immediately to an authorised service centre for a full service.

The roughness in the sliders and the joystick could do internal damage to their contacts.

I was afraid you'd say that. I was kind of leaning that way myself.

I think I'll try to use it for a couple of days just so that I can come up with a more complete picture of what's working and what's not so smooth anymore, and then take it in. Damn!

I would open it up and make sure all the connections are solid, ie- check that the RAM is still firmly seated. Check the data and power ribbon cables that go to the SSD to make sure they are solid. Look for anything obvious like cracked circuit boards. loose screws, etc. My 61 fell off my stand from about 4 feet high and landed on the plastic end cap. I was able to cushion the fall somewhat, but it still sustained damage. The plastic end cap got jammed on a few of the bottom screws, but I was able to free it up. It appeared all the damage was cosmetic, as it did fire up and work properly. Thank goodness for the SSD. Had it been an HDD, it probably would have taken a dump. Now that's a testament to build quality!

So sorry to hear about such bad luck you've just had....something we all dread when moving the heavy K "lump".

I agree with Sharp,it's better not to use it until further checks have been made,to avoid potential problems.
Hope you know a good service center that can help.

Being positive though,it may well be just simple adjustments that will be needed,as the unit itself is still working and probably only needs a few tweaks..(??..).
Of course,you can check it yourself,but only if you feel comfortable with doing so.

I once backed into my my 01/Wfd while it was on an X stand that was locked in the standing position. I turned around just quick enough to watch it slam into a concrete floor with a thin commercial carpet covering it...no padding. The sound made my blood curdle. But to my amazement the ONLY damage was the front corner of the end cap, which had carpet fibers imbedded in the plastic. That was almost 20 years ago and it's still going strong.

Anyway, get it checked out by a pro and let's hope they can get things moving smoothly again without too much of a strain on your wallet.

The knobs on the sliders pull off (as do the other knobs)

You may find that simply pulling them off a fraction, or pulling them completely off and when you push them back on, don't push them fully to the bottom (talking about a fraction of a gap) fixes the sliders.

I had one that rubbed a bit and felt stiff, this fixed it for me.

Remove the plastic on the sliders, check if they are all aligned, do the same for the knobs. Did you notice if the numbers on the screen move in a normal manner when you move the sliders/knobs ?

For the x-y lever with the click noise, there is something broken... If your Kronos is not garanted anymore, you can open and see if you can repair yourself, otherwise, the service center will change it entirely.

I know someone who will close is flight case with sold duct tape now

Thanks everyone, for your great suggestions!

I spent a couple of hours playing last night - everything seems to be working. I took the advice of some who suggested to lift up the plastic caps on the sliders - I lifted them ever so slightly and now it slides relatively smoothly. It seems the only thing in question is the x-y stick (not the big joystick above the ribbon controller - the other one) which makes a tactile click when moving it from the left. Other than that, all seems well.

I think I will be taking the unit in to the service center in a few days when I get some time, but I think the urgency has dissipated somewhat after playing it last night.

And yes - an experience like this will guarantee that I'll be double - and triple checking each and every time I close the case that the latches are in fact latched!

This experience happened once before (many years ago) with a soft case with a zipper closure... no damage at that time, but scary to say the least. Now its easy to check the zipper. But with the Kronos in a huge case with latches, I'm going to put priority into latching it before I engage in any kind of conversation or anything else to distract from latching it shut. The last thing I need is for that Gator case to function as a coffin!

Being in a melancholy sort of mood after this ordeal, I kind of sat down with it and looked for a combi that matched how I was feeling. I came up with combi Int-A072 (Rose Wood Classic SW2) and just proceeded to play. This is what I came up with:

Pretty much everything is working correctly at this point (yay)! Except for the x-y lever... the unit goes in for service later this week or early next week
