Wave Sequencing

Post by Bertotti »

I brought this up in another thread and it got me fired up into this section again. I have not read the manual on this yet. I have just been playing with the parameters of some of the current sequences to see how it affects things. Quite fun. I am curious any of you may be incorporating the vector joystick with the Wave Sequencing? I haven't tried but was thinking it may be useful, and wanted to ask before I frustrate myself trying to incorporate it somehow.

A side question would be why is this particular feature in the global menu?

Thanks All! :D

I have started digging into the manual about the wave sequencing and ams. On page 173 opg, I am reading the steps for the picture. I am not sure I follow this fully I see it mutes step one but what is the dotted line representation? (just the fades?) How does this affect the rest of the steps? step one to 0 and the rest are turned on? or all they all on but when switch one is pressed it just mutes it?

yes,
using the vector feature for programs based on wave sequences can bring it really to life. The way i use it is to assign different parameters or volume of the oscs to the vector ranges and then i create an vector automation pattern to create the movement over the wave sequenced sound. I never use the vector stick manually, but of course that would work also.

Here's an example where i use a vector automation pattern to greate a more movements in the sound:

Great Qui!Thanks! I thought I saw that somewhere before I should have know it was a video of yours. I am moving my link to your vids to my main book marks bar where I can always see it!

Before the Kronos I was looking at the stage two and even searched around for a nord wave. Wave sequencing is very intriguing in the ways you can work with it, or is it just me?

Doing some experimenting page 173 of the opg is making more sense, still I think a good dig into AMS would help. Actually that would help for everything we do on the Kronos!

Have you guys/gals noticed just how much stereo wave sequencing affects the overall board performance? I read that using a stereo multisample will cause ti to be in stereo for the whole sequence using twice the voices, vey flexible but how big of a cost is it to pay? A stereo wave sequence isn't going to cause a lot of voice stealing in say my German and Japanese Grand combis, is it?

i agree, wave sequencing in the kronos is very powerful. You can also use your own very long samples in the wave sequence engine, that's also somethings that is really impressive.

If you search the forum history on wave sequencing discussions you will find several threads discussing all kind of tips, tricks and examples of what you can do with wave sequences. I've already told you in one of the threads that the basics can be learned from one of my tutorials. But also the operation guide has a great set of instructions of how to get the most out of wave sequences (especially the position chapters are great!)

Now to show what you can achieve with just wave sequences watch the first track in one of my demo videos:
What i do in this video is playing live with several wave sequence programs i created and combined those in a combi. Even the rythm percussion is played by wave sequences. Halfway i added the drumtrack, but everything else is wave sequences.

One thing that is really nice of one of the programs used in this combi is the assignment of the AMS source of Switch 1. When i go to the bridge in the song you will see me activating Switch 1. Now what it does is that it adds a second layer in the sound with a timed delay, so you hear a 'guitar' like sound 1 quarter note behind the notes i play. This is also done with positioning tricks in the wave sequence.

Now this is all quite advanced stuff to program but it shows the power of the wave sequence programs when they are combined in a combi. So to be clear, the first song in this video doesn't use KARMA, it's completely done with wave sequence programs i created.

Qui you have a way better memory then I have, I forgot all about that thread! Thanks for reminding me. I will do a good search and take some notes on the tips and tricks. That is a great video I have watched several times but those things are still beyond me. I will continue experimenting and reading and get there eventually! I appreciate the help and I apologize if I was to redundant from an old thread!

If I buy magical spaces or suite can I dig into them and see how you programmed these things? I think that would be a great learning tool!

yes, the magical space or magical suite adds lots of new wave sequences to your library. Of course you can then use them for your own sounds or investigate how i programmed the programs and wave sequences. The combis above can be downloaded for free from my site, but hey only work when you have the magical space or suite programs installed.

Also the string sound (with the vector automation) is in the magical space and magical suite library, you could check that one to see how vector automation is applied to bring the sounds more alive.

also check out this thread where i explained how to create the 'random' positioning effect of steps in a program sound.

I will check out that thread Qui thanks. I do not see magical suite on your page but I do see the combo of magical space and magical clouds! I will get on my computer when I get home and get working on this some more.

Edf it does look quite powerful and Qui makes it all look so easy!

The instructions (labeled "Modulating individual steps with the AMS Mixer") are separate from the graphic below (labeled "Wave Sequence step Durations, Crossfade times, and Fade-In and Fade-Out shapes").

Dan why doesn't Korg play up the wave sequencing abilities more? I looked at the current Korg Kronos page walked through the various pages of the site dealing with Kronos and it what I see is one engine and the list below then on other Kronos pages it breaks the nine down even more.

Synthesis Types:
9 types
SGX-1 Premium Piano (Acoustic Piano)
EP-1 MDS Electric Piano (Electric Piano)
HD-1 High Definition Synthesizer(PCM)
AL-1 Analog Synthesizer (Analog Modeling)
CX-3 Tonewheel Organ (Tonewheel Organ Modeling)
STR-1 Plucked Strings (Physical Modeling)
MOD-7 Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer (VPM Synthesis)
MS-20EX (CMT Analog Modeling)
PolysixEX (CMT Analog Modeling)

Yet all there is that I found quickly about wave sequencing was

Wave Sequences:
598 user memory, 165 preload

Sure seems like Korg is doing themselves a disservice not building up the fact that this is in the Kronos and is very very powerful. I don't understand why it would be glossed over so quickly. I would think advertising it as well as the nine would only put you farther ahead, not that you haven't already lapped everyone else!
