Bit hard by the post-NAMM Kronos 2 bug - sympathy pains?

Post by holdsg »

I went to NAMM.
I played the Kronos 2...and a few other boards.
But I can't escape the Kronos GAS, is there any hope for me?

Seriously, I used to play Korg boards 5-6 years ago, been away playing another brand that starts with K for several years. I was interested in Kronos when it first came out, but was leery, and based on much of this forum, for good reason. I have to think version 3 (1, 1X, then 2, right?) they have a lot of the bugs worked out.

Its probably overkill for what I do...one band I play old guy classic rock, so I need good piano, EP, organ, and horns, that's it. the other band I am in is originals outlaw country, so I need good honky tonk piano and regular piano, organ, and accordion.

But every so often I get inspired and want to record my own stuff, and that's when I think the Kronos will really inspire me to new heights as to my neglected originals.

I'm thinking of placing an order for the 73-key so I can use my same trusty GATOR hard case for it. It will add about 10 lbs to my load in, but I view that as a good trade off.

For those of you regularly gigging your Kronos, is there anything I should be extra careful of, in and above what we all do to be careful on a gig (keep away from cymbal stand crashes, drunk patrons, etc).

About to join the brotherhood and feeling good about that.

A UPS is a good investment. I got an 80 bucks APC, very happy with it.

is that just for outages, or does it power condition as well?

I have two of them.

One "side" of plugs has UPS + Conditioning/Surge protection. The other side only has surge protection. (One side pulls from the battery, the other side not, but both are conditioned)

Will be getting a new one before I start gigging again due to these ones being 5+ years old and needing a new battery.

Would definitely recommend and will purchase again!

In case I made up my mind and buy the new Kronos 2 88 Keys I'm dreaming about :-)

Besides the UPS also check the dimensions of your gator case. The Kronos is a bit bigger then normal boards or at least so I discovered with my X61.

Nice to see another bass + keyboard player (sometimes in the same song, for sure).

+1 on getting a UPS. I have 2, one for home and one for practice/gigs, since I bring my Kronos back and forth but have all the wiring and a keyboard stand in place at both places so that I can cut down on setup time.

Yes, the UPS will condition your power to prevent weird reboots or other issues from power glitches. This is a big deal because the Kronos takes over 3 minutes from power-on before it's ready to play sounds. The new OS shaves about 40 seconds off that.

I think you'll find the Kronos Set List mode very handy, esp since it's color-coded now. Makes it very easy to pre-arrange everything (individual programs, splits/layers, sequences) so that it's a quick glance and touch on the screen to go to another sound, esp useful when you get one hand free from the bass during a song...

Boot time with just the factory sounds is about 1:30 for me. Extra samples will add to that of course.

Thanks dudes.

If it fits my 76-key Kurz with room to spare, I bet the Kronos 73 will fit just fine, but for sure I will check the specs.

UPS seems like a wise investment too.

Looks exactly like the one I have. Same brand too. I just have euro sockets. It's way heavier than you think, but it has kept my Kronos stable and protected from surges and unexpected outages.
