"Old" Kronos owners…don't feel so bad

Post by Davd C. Polich »

While the "new" Kronos has a few improvements, I certainly don't
have any regrets that I bought a Kronos X. The new version 3.02
firmware brings my Kronos X up to the spec of the new Kronos, pretty much.

Actually I'm one of those people who likes the look of the Kronos X more
than the new Kronos. I don't care for the wooden end panels, and the knobs on the Kronos X are a little bigger than than they are on the new
Kronos.

I'm not knocking Korg, the Kronos is a great synth and kudos to them for
bringing out an updated model. I just don't think there's any reason to
sell my current Kronos to get the new one, that's all.

And purchasing/installing the "New KRONOS Sound Pack" on an X or 2011 Kronos brings us owners up to date with the 2015 Kronos 2 sounds.

Quite happy with this.

Unless someone wants a 2nd Kronos, maybe a different keyboard size, I am unaware of a strong reason.

I doubt there is any sound(quality) difference with the Kronos 2. I still recall posts here that the " X" sounded ' better ' than the 2011 Kronos. It is not the case.

I understand some like and can afford ' new ' every 2 yrs or so, just like many car owners. Thats a personal choice, IMO.

I'm one of those folks. I have the Gen 1 Korg Kronos 73. It works most excellently, and has upgraded everything hardware wise. That said, I'm an 88 key boards player, and miss everything about an 88 key. I also want everything in one spot, which means getting a single board.

I figured if I'm going to pay a bunch of money for a new board, instead of getting the X88, I'll just get the K2 and be done with it.

I have an original K-73, believe it or not, haven't upgraded any hardware yet . Never had the need.

As is, it's stll pretty much overwelming for me. But not only am I not a power user, I'm still in the learning process. On an understanding scale from 1 to 10, prolly at 4.

I really love it thought, the more I learn, the more I'm overwhelm by the beauty of its inner woking.

What a great workstation!

I have an original K73 as well. What I can't understand is WHY in the WORLD would the make the knobs smaller?

I've already replaced all the knobs on my Kronos for better feeling larger knobs. The stock knobs are god AWFUL IMO!!!

In a way it is totally overwhelming, I wonder how many Kronos owners can say they are a master of all the different synthesis methods available on the Kronos and their possible interactions? My bet is that is not many.

The only question about the Kronos 2 I have is, "Does it have a faster processor that makes it's response any zippier?"

Since upgrading to Version 3, I've notice my original Kronos has an ever so slight lag when changing sequences. It's not a big deal and I'm not looking to upgrade, but I am curious...

After owning an X61 since August, I think I can say I am fairly familiar with AL-1 and CX3 as the ones I'm mainly needed. I'm sure I still have things to learn in those as well before moving on to the other synth engines! But that's what I wanted when I purchased the Kronos: Something deep like my EX5 or Nord G2 Engine. I had no interest in a ROMPLER. ;)

And as I said to the missues, the Kronos is a bargain. 9 synth engines for (at the purchase price of £2400) £266 each!

Like the OP, I'm quite happy with the X. Very happy with Korg for its update policy, and not fussed on wooden end cheeks either!

Since there really isn't any basic difference between the K, KX and K2, I'm sure that most "old KRONOS owners" don't feel bad at all, especially those of us who have kept our "old" machines up-to-date with the latest OS, RAM and SSD expansion, Berlin Grand / SGX-2, etc., etc...I'll have to admit to thinking about making some replacement end caps, though, maybe rosewood, or cast aluminum or carbon fiber styled like the OASYS, but even the plastic end caps don't make me feel too bad...although after hauling the K73 and playing a 3-hour gig, this 68-year-old KRONOS owner does feel a little tired...

I could have waited a little longer and got the KRONOS 2, but i went for the x.
I liked that the x looked like the monolyth from 2001 a space oddysey.
When korg added the wood end caps, the Kronos lost something in apearence.
That's just my opinion.
The main reason i went with the x though, was i saved hundred's of dollar's.
lol.

I got a good discount on the X61 as well in August. I figured something else might be coming along as the Kronos has been out for while. I hadn't figured it would be another Kronos and I could upgrade my X to the same spec. And I'm not fussed on the wood look at all, and doesn't affect the sound or my playing!
