Yes. In a combi, on the 3rd tab from the left, you will see an option to set the Keyboard and Velocity ranges. Basically you're setting up a split point. For example, if you want the Rhodes to be on the left side of the keyboard, assign its Top Note to be something like C4. Then for the String part, make its bottom note a C#4.
Quick tip: to assign a top or bottom note, select the instrument on the Keyboard range page. Then highlight the Top Note square, but instead of guessing and typing in a note value, you can instead just hold down the ENTER key then press the actual note on the keyboard.
Just be sure to assign both your Rhodes and String patches to the same global MIDI channel (under the Timbre tab then MIDI).

You can do exactly what you want. You're not just setting split points but key zone ranges specifying the bottom and top key of each zone.
You can set the range of each timbre in a combi. So you can have splits, layers or a combination of them.
The Operations Guide has a good explanation on page 69 under Layers, Splits, and Velocity Switches.

You just need to set the midi channels accordingly. For practical reasons (KARMA mainly), keep your Kronos global midi channel on 1. Create a combi and set any timbres you want to play from the Kronos to midi channel 1. Set any timbres you want to play from the other keyboard to midi channel 2 and set that board's midi transmission channel to 2.

Like Sander said you set the MIDI channels so to separate the two keyboards. If you have the 2nd keyboard set to MIDI channel 2, and the sounds you want to play from the Kronos set to global, then you are set. However, there is Karma. Karma allows many things including MIDI channel merging etc. Try turning Karma off on the Kronos panel. That may stop the Rhodes from playing under the strings.
