TR Versus Triton Extreme Velocity Input

Post by philipgruver »

I was playing a Triton Extreme and a TR MIDIed together side by side with identical program parameters and found that the TR had a greater variation in response to velocity input. That is, when I hit the keys softly the TR is quieter than the Extreme and when I hit the keys harder the TR is louder than the Extreme.

The set up was as follows:
• I ran a midi cable out of the Extreme and into the TR so that when I hit a key on the Extreme both keyboards sound. Note that when I ran the cable out the TR and into the Extreme and hit a key on the TR, the results described above were the same.
• I ran the left/mono audio out of the Extreme into mixer channel 1 and the left/mono audio out of the TR into the mixer channel 2, and verified the EQ, input gain and other parameters were identical. Note that when I…
o Swapped the cables, the results above were the same,
o Swapped the mixer channel 1/2 inputs, the results above were the same
• The program I used was the TR B-65 “Warm E.Grand” which I manually copied over to the Extreme. Even though the program architecture is slightly different, I was able to verify every equivalent setting was identical.

Can anyone think of a technical reason why the TR would have a wider response to velocity input than the Extreme?

Other than what you said about the architecture being slightly different, I can only say that maybe Korg thought they needed to make the velocities more sensitive with a greater response range between the models. I'm guessing as the TEX was an earlier version, the TR is showing the newer Korg vision.

Not a technical reason in the sense you asked but that's the best reason I can dream up.

Very interesting topic. I would be grateful to see official Korg statement on this. Velocity response was one of main things when I was choosing a synth. Being assured that TR and EXTREME will response in same way (same RH2 action used) I went for EXTREME. If there was Korg publication on technical details regarding their instruments, the choice would be better motivated. Let me add that I had no chance to check both instruments side by side before purchase. I can't assume that almost halfprice TR has better velocity response than EXTREME.

ahh, forgot to add: philip, what "Convert position" setting did You use on both TR and EXTREME? (PG, p. 155)

OK, also other idea to verify the velocities. May I ask You to use my simple MIDI testing application:

http://www.live-styler.de/kksound/MIDIT ... cation.zip
(just select TR or TEX as input port, press START and play velocities)

or

MIDI monitor (like http://www.midiox.com/) and compare velocity dynamics of both TR and EXTREME using same velocity settings of both TR and EXTREME (velocity curve in GLOBAL->BASIC and convert position in GLOBAL->MIDI).

There is also standalone MidiChecker program available for this purpose; available to download from this forum:

Thanks
