A single voice for an entire choir...
I was wondering... does the Oasys have any kind of IFX to make a choir out of a single male/female voice recorded (wav)? Rec a human voice singing - apply IFX - choir effect!...
Can this be done?

Nope.
You have a pitch shift that can double the sound but nothing that will get you to the level of a choir.

You can try using the vocoder, like I did in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4K1Jk2FFNE
Or, you can chain 3 or more Pitch Shifters together. Using different delay times, will help sell an ensemble, for example
P.Shift 1 set FINE to +32 and DELAY TIME to 27 msec
P.Shift 2 Fine -30, Delay 13 msec
P.Shift 3 Fine 20, Delay 7 msec.
You can also set one to -12 (an octave) for a bass voice. Play with the settings. These pass enough if you want to do Monty Pythonesque "monk humming".
If you don't want to chain Pitch Shifters, you can set up to 4 audio tracks to record Input 1 (your mic), at the same time (Multi REC), so it is the same voice on 4 tracks. You can route each track to its own Pitch Shifter.

You could layer a number of voices and then sample it back to get a single voice, but the OASYS itself isn't going to do that for you.
Keyboard Rig: Korg Kronos, Moog Sub 37, Waldorf Blofeld Module, Neo Instruments Ventilator II, Moog MiniFooger Delay, Strymon BigSky, Roland KC-150, Mackie 802-VLZ4 Mixer
Don't want this to be a shameless promotion, but did you see OASYS ASSAULT ?.

It gives you single voices, choirs and much more.
There's also a free bonus sound that was left over from the project to download here.

What you are after has been completely catered for by two organisations:Pr0 wrote:I was wondering... does the Oasys have any kind of IFX to make a choir out of a single male/female voice recorded (wav)? Rec a human voice singing - apply IFX - choir effect!...

Roland - with their 'Vocal Design' Technology as found on the VSynthGT, their just discontinued VP550 and its replacement VP770 (announced at NAMM 2009). I own the Roland VSynthGT and can say from experience that it's absolutely incredible - single voice in, entire choir out. It sound amazing - but note - you need to play the keyboard to create the chords and various choir sections (if holding 4 notes then four part choir...). apparently the VP770 is even better than the VSynthGT and VP550, and I'll be very keen to get one (for other reasons too) but the VSynthGT is astounding and in an altogether different league to vocoding (all Roland's instruments here are vocoders to).
That said - Mike Conway's demos on the OASYS Vocoder are impressive - so you should try that before considering other options.
- Another organisation who do what you want is the French Institute IRCAM - Centre for Research into Computer Music and Acoustics. For about 400 Euro per year you can license their software suite - it is a staggering array of technologies. I license them but have not delved into the software deeply yet, but intend to. One of the applications (IMTR-Repertoire) takes a single vocal line and transforms it into a choir - more as a kind of plugin as you want rather than with Roland where you have to play the performance on the keyboard (or replay it from a MIDI sequence). I haven't used this yet but by all accounts it’s awesome. Check out the English version of:
http://www.ircam.fr/?L=1
and :
http://forumnet.ircam.fr/?L=1
Note that you need to own Cycling74 Max5 (formerly MSP/MAX) to run most of IRCAM's software.

For the sake of completeness there is another company who has a product that will do precisely what you want. It's TC Helicon's Voice Live 2.
http://www.tc-helicon.com/voicelive2.asp
You can try the short demo on that web page.
One voice into a choir, and much more. It sounds OK to me. Just released.

If external software is being thrown into the pot, then programs like Antares Choir will do this.

I still don't believe though it's possible with just the OASYS. Pitch Shift will get you close, and a vocoder is a completely different thing altogether as you have to sing and play at the same time.

Here's another softy that stuck in my mind as the developers are the guys behind the technology used in Ableton Live :
http://vielklang.zplane.de/

I just gave the demo of that a spin on one of the tracks I am working on. I A/B'ed with Waves Doubler 4 that I was actually using for that purpose and I felt the Waves plug-in gave a better result personally. So we'll add Waves Doubler 4 to this list. It's a neat plug-in that takes your signal and gives you four copies that you can apply delay, pitch shifting, panning to etc. With the modulation capabilities it has it really is a powerful effect for this kind of task. Run your original signal out to a couple of busses hosting that effect to get the higher voice count. The Antares plugin is certainly easy to use, and provides an easy button for something I think is better achieved using a homegrown plug-in chain.Sharp wrote:If external software is being thrown into the pot, then programs like Antares Choir will do this.

How come no one said Chorus, even just for the comic wordplay value

Speaking of Antares, last time I looked at their stuff was when looking for vocal correction, but on that occassion I again preferred something else, namely Celemony Melodyne. That product in the more funky flavours would also allow you to build up a choral effect from a single voice. Not only letting you shift pitch but also adjust formants accordingly to get a more realistic result. What I really like about Melodyne was that when not tweaking vocals, it had numerous other capabilities, such as correcting timing on any audio material and reworking drum loops. The cheaper Uno and plug-in versions are actually very powerful and multi-purpose tools. Money well spent and with DNA coming, it's even more compelling.

Melodyne is a really great tool. Last year I worked with a friend on a comedic single, and used Melodyne to create three-part harmonies from a triple-tracked, unison vocal line. Unfortunately, it's not a perfect example of the high quality of which Melodyne is capable, since the vocals had already been "hamsterized" before I got the files (listen to the demo snippets, and you'll understand what I mean). All of the sounds are from the OASYS, aside from the vocals and drums.
